cruiser bike 2

Postby tartosuc » Wed Dec 03, 2008 12:52 pm

Hi,

as some of you already know, i've been working on electrifying my Electra rat fink to use as my daily commutter..it has worked quite good but i wanted battery setup lower and rear suspension.

so i started to build myself a complete frame from scratch.
here are the first build pics...weld are getting better as this is my second welding project.

the frame material used to be a bed frame...

motor used is a golden motor 36v.

built the support for the pivot point of the swingarm,,right now it's not welded in place, it is butted inside and i can put it in place or take it out to build the swigarm and check the fit Image

battery rack almost complete.

And it will have rear suspension too! Dang cool. 8) Are you going to have to lean way forward, or are you planning to use handlebars with a big sweep back to your seat?

Yes rear suspension! the only complaint i had with the other bike was that it was a bit hard on the back due to the bad road conditions..so rear suspenion is needed.
I did not decide on the handle bar yet...i have multiple type here (cruiser style, ape hanger etc) i will choose whjat will fit best when i will have the seat and crank position setup. I might also build my own set of bars.

last night i've worked on the swigarm...that bike is gonna be long!!! about 6 feet axle to axle! pics to come!

I can relate to the bed frame. My buddy was throwing one out, so I salvaged it. Parts and pieces of that bed frame have gone into many of my projects. Looks like a good start.

latest progress, I've worked on the swingarm.

i have less time theses days..christmas shopping, snowshoeing and the snowscoot season is taking all my time!

i'm not sure yet how i will finish it...i can keep the part low and build from there. or angle to lower part and add another part in an angle going to the shock...

I love it! That bike is going to be a work of art. Seeing stuff like this, and some custom welded bikes I've seen on the street, makes me want to get some welding tools.

Quick reply (for once, short):

The build, all about it: those arched tubes (from a bedframe!): ingenious. STRONG: arch-like, shock absorbing.
The CG: vastly lowered. Lead acid for now, makes full sense. Adds to the bike's stability.
So much inherently -genius- thought going into this bike. I'm not woofing; just stating the facts.

This will be a most interesting, unique and COOL-looking and FINE-riding e-build. Long wheel base:
super smooth on rough roads; just not a curb-hopper (who needs that, really, anyway?).

Your new super-fan,

r.

wow thanks for that!

there's been a lot of thoughts before i started that project, but also a lot of things are invented as I go, especialy the details!

your right it will not be a curb hopper but i'm already used to the long wheelbase from the previous build of my chopper and anyway i dont have sharp turn in my commute..except for one..

the next build wil be a crazy curb hopper, i'm thinking of building a tilting trike, no pedals just E-powered...but that next year!
thanks again for the nice comment

Oh yes! As an antique car buff, I read many of the early magazines and books from the turn of the last century.
Roads then were unpaved, rutted, terrible. Autos all had high wheels and narrow tires, pumped hard to bear the heavy weight.
The longer the wheelbase of the car and the larger its wheels in diameter: the better the ride was considered.
The luxury cars had wheels of some 40 inches diameter! Imagine the unsprung weight of those wooden-spoked wheels, though!
Yet, with their long leaf springs, generally undamped, and long wheelbases, these cars could go forty or fifty miles an hour on "decent"
roads (many roads were mud rivers when it rained: muck a foot deep or more).

Your bike is much like the early cars in some salient ways just described.
And on today's paved roads....and with your rear suspension: this will be the most wonderful ride,
and super-stable at all speeds.....and it looks like nothing ever seen before.

No "wow" necessary. You "simply" KWYADAWYADI

i did some work over the christmas period

I had to switch my coil spring shock for an air shock as my leverage ratio is to low for the springs that i have in stock...works good now

follow up on my build

after a lot of sanding/cleaning and details fabrication like disc brake mount and chain tensionner, I've finally put a coat of paint on the frame...not sure if i want to keep that color, it looks too much like my burrito even if the color is significantly different on the cspray can top. ...
what colors would you see?
