Charger 28S / 116V (maybe Zero?)

Charger 28S / 116V (maybe Zero?)

Looking for a charger to be used with a 28S battery. Ideally something slightly adjustable as I only want to charge to about 4.1-4.15V per cell.

A used 116V Zero charger would do the job great such as the 116-1200 and 116-1300.

The four Meanwell HLG-600H-54A LED PSUs I have here were used, 2s2p, to charge a 28s motorcycle pack by their previous owner, because they're potted and fanless, so could be mounted on the bike without fear of vibration or weather damaging them.

I'm using just one on a 14s2p pack of EIG NMC cells on the SB Cruiser trike; it's mounted under the trike and sees lots of bumpiness every day, and has been completely submerged several times now while riding in heavy rains.

The A version is adjsutable voltage and current. I leave mine at 57.6v, 12A, to charge the pack at 0.3C, to 4.11v/cell.

Looked for something used and have my eye on a pair of used 320H-54A (essentially half the current capability of yours). I just want to start with something small to just charge the batteries for testing the motor then try and find a more permanent solution. Probably either build a second battery pack to be hot swappable or fork out the money for 8 of the 600H-54As to get 116V 48A for one hour charging (about 1C with VTC5As)

FWIW, if you're not going to mount them on the vehicle, there are cheaper (open-frame) versions of the Meanwell LED PSUs, though they'll need fan cooling most likely.

Or there are things like old used Sorenson Lab PSUs that are adjustable voltage and current, which may be found on Ebay and the like. Most of them are quite large, even the SMPS style. I have an old DCS 55-55, which means it adjusts from zero to 55 A and V, independently--but it is almost two square feet by around four inches thick, and probably weighs 50lbs at least. Runs off 230VAC (requires three phase for full power, but can do about half of it's max power on regular "dryer plug" 230VAC).

AFAIK it could be seriesed with a second one; I don't know if they can be directly paralleled or not (could probably be done through a power diode, but that would require it's own heatsink).


There are other brands and types of Lab PSUs, too, but the only one I have experience with is Sorenson (both ancient linear / transformer types, and the slightly more modern one noted above).

The only potential problem with any adjustable Lab PSU is that you would need to make something to cover and/or lock the knobs to prevent any accidental adjustments.
