Rear Hub Motor for 160mm Dropouts. 16"-20" Wheel.

Postby mastershake916 » Sat Aug 11, 2012 4:08 pm

I'm looking for a rear hub motor that can be used on a bicycle with 160mm rear drop-out spacing.
If it's already laced into a 16", 18", or 20" rim, that would be great. Direct drive is much preferred.

Haha, well, for anyone else who's wondering, I'm still looking, pretty much any voltage and "power" is fine.

Anyone find or know of rear hub motors with extra wide axles? I need one for 170mm dropouts!
The standard 205mm wide axle on the MAC motor just doesn't cut it.

Cromotors fit wide drop outs, but, minimum is really 150mm to fit really well so 160mm isn't a problem. it might be more motor than you are looking for depending on your application.

Ilia Brouk offers Crystalyte H40 rear hubs that have long axles with long flats capable of fitting into dropouts between 135mm and 185mm.

Can you accept the 17.5# weight?

On the positive, you'd have plenty of room for a 9 sp freewheel.

Hmm thats a good find, I might end up going that route. But I really would like something geared and light as this thing will be for offroading and will be grinding along at low RPMs - when geared motors are more efficient.

With spacers, most hub motors will fit axles this long.
I've got a crystalyte HS3548 in a 20" wheel with a 2.5" pirelli tire fitted to it if you are interested. Total diameter is 21" due to the tallness of the tire.

The axle is approximately 215mm long.
This would probably fit both 170mm and 160mm bikes.

A cromotor of course, would likely fit just as well if you want a bigger motor.

Pro-tips for noobs: Avoid BMS Battery like the plague | Charge RC Lipos to 4.15v, stop discharging at 3.5-3.6v | Use torque plates/arms! | Rear mounted hubs are always best

If I go with a DD hub the H35 or H40 are likely candidates...

However I was hoping to run a setup like this in 170mm dropouts:

Is there a reason you want to geared vs DD or is it just a personal preference thing? I've only owned one geared hub but it was a generic no name hub in a 20" setup and even on 50V I found it had no performance. Haven't had the pleasure of riding a BMC or a Mac motor yet which I seem like way more fun. Are you just planning to go slow and do a lot of climbing? Thermal management becomes an issue in any low RPM high load situation and while geared is more efficient at low speed and they are pretty poor at shedding heat.

Pluses and minuses to each type. Downside to a big motor like a Cromotor (and a few other large DD hubs) is lack of rear gearing choices and it weighs 26lbs, but I've found running a triple front chain ring I could get around a lot of the single rear gear issue. I don't off road though so weight doesn't matter much to me. I also ride a 26" setup with a 9C 2808 and am putting a 9C 2806 into my wife's 20" bicycle.
