Graduating in the Fall, Need a Career.

Postby E-racer » Sat Jun 30, 2012 12:25 am

Endless-sphere has been a wonderful source of inspiration and information for me over the years. I am approaching graduation and seeking a career in the battery electric industry. I competed in US First robotics all 4 years of high school and Formula SAE throughout college at Southern Polytechnic State University. I have built two EV's that are documented here on ES. My major is Business Management with a concentration in Operations and Technology management. I would appreciate any leads and can email my resume on demand. Thank you all!

Racer, first and foremost, your best leads are where you interned over summers. Next interview at every college sponsored job fair you can. The big thing is NOT TO get discouraged in this economy. My daughter entered the job market last year with her degree in organic chemistry. The ratio was about one company visit for about every 10 resumes or college based interviews. This was followed by about one offer for each of 8 or so site visit interviews. She was so excited about a few that called her back, and moved the interview up the management chain. I had to work with her a bit when some of those never called back after the second interview, but showed extreme interest during it. This was about the first time she was not at the top of the pile...

Just don't give up. Work every one you know, everyone your parents know. Everyone. Just like you are doing here.

I told my daughter that her goal was to get into the right company and worry about positioning later. I was amazed at how careful and focused these companies were with these new graduates. They were really screening these candidates. I could tell by the questions and the method of interview that technical ability, dress, manners, writing ability, presentation ability, team ability, personal psychological balance, and business EQ, were all in the mix.

I really hope he skips your posts. The last thing we need is more good people being coerced into raping the earth for a few bucks and some short term security. If he had interest in oil drilling and earth fracturing, he would have gone to school for that crap. Since the thing that he did go to school for is an emerging technology that's moving very quickly, unless he wants to get left behind, and waste that education, he needs to get into the battery field and get his hands dirty asap. I'm really sorry that you think that battery tech is a waste of time for him. Part of me wonders if you get really drunk on nasty whiskey and try to troll on the weekends.

To OP,
Follow your dreams. Big Moose gave you some awesome advice. From my experience, the recommendations about moving out west are accurate too. There may be isolated places moving technology forward elsewhere but you will have some choices in the west. What ever you do, do it because you love it and go after it! We need good batteries!
Turn it OFF!!!

+1..
I'd rather starve than take a job like that.

Think also of where you get to live when you work a job like that.. Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota.. maybe the top of Utah or Colorado if you are lucky..

Luke on the other hand works in Santa Cruz, CA. ;)... many EV companies are located on nice parts of the west coast, and on their salary, you can definitely afford it..

Pro-tips for noobs: Avoid BMS Battery like the plague | Charge RC Lipos to 4.15v, stop discharging at 3.5-3.6v | Use torque plates/arms! | Rear mounted hubs are always best
