UWRacing Electric Formula Car

Post by jjsylvestre » Mar 18, 2016 6:04 pm

Hey EV enthusiasts,

I am excited to announce that several other team members and myself at Wisconsin Racing will be developing the University of Wisconsin Madison's first electric Formula1-style racecar to compete with in 2017!

As you guys are aware, we have an overbearing environmental issue to deal with; the consistent data trend in rising average global temperatures.
To aim at solving this possible existential threat, our team, Wisconsin Racing, is attempting to develop talented engineers early on in their education to accelerate the transition to a sustainable future. Our plan is to raise $20K to build a Formula SAE Electric car for the 2017 competition season. This vehicle will teach students the necessary skills to apply to industry, and ultimately help bring more fully electric cars to the mass market.

From an architecture standpoint, the car utilizes a four wheel drive hub motor design with an aggressive aerodynamics package and hybrid monocoque chassis. Compared to our combustion FSAE car, this new electric propelled vehicle boasts a predicted 1.7G of acceleration, a 30% increase! This should bring us from 0-60mph in under 2.5 seconds. It’s fast, fun, compelling, and responsible. I would love to hear any questions, ideas, suggestions, etc. you may have.

Also, we launched a GoFundMe campaign yesterday. If you want more information about what exactly we are doing, I encourage you to give it a look.

Thanks Itchynackers! We're very excited to represent Wisconsin and put them on the map for engineering world class electric vehicles.

Hi Hillhater,
Delft and AMZ's have incredibly well-engineered vehicles that are entirely custom (to my knowledge), but luckily we don't have to compete against them this first year. Our plan is to first win United States circuit and then once we reach that level, we can compete with the European teams.

Thanks for linking me to that discussion. That was interesting to read. The motors we plan to use are somewhat comparable to AMZ's weighing in at 3.7 kg with a power output of 30kW. The hard part is not exceeding the traction limit. We are spending a lot of time developing a launch algorithm that should theoretically allow us to ride right along the traction limit.
