GPS tracker

Or perhaps better yet,
Make a sign large enough to almost cover your seat. detachable of course for when you ride.
Anytime you park your bike it is right there in plain sight .
Anyone stealing a bike has to sit on the seat , they would see that better than if it was on a fender.

I will still look for a small, movement , alarm that will pierce a thief's eardrums.
One to just zip tie somewhere hard to find, but I know where it is so as to activate it when parked.
If nothing is made at this time , someone will soon make one.

OK. I give up! I'm just gonna get a label to fix prominently on the top of the front fender for my recumbent tricycle:

WARNING: GPS Tracker Installed!

(No actual tracker installed yet. Just this label installed.)

"activate it when parked". OH! Bonus points! Actually, thinking already of getting some more seat padding... like a pillow. To counter that dreaded SBS*. So, now I'm looking to pick up some cloth and do a little hand embroidery sign warning about that built in GPS Tracking thingee.

I wouldn´t say that a GPS tracker is installed. As a thief, I would bring something with me, which blocks the Signal of the GPS.

Yah. But you're not "normal". Hehe... Guessing that 99% of bike thieves so far aren't equipped to deal with something "new" to them.

A sticker warning a GPS is a good Ideal most bikes and scooter are stolen on impulse or opportunity and a well placed sticker is a cheap deterrent, along with a good lock and benign careful were and how long you leave your bike .

I had not even thought about that or known it is possible. Now knowing that is possible,
I would not put such a sign on my bike, I was not going to put a sign on my own bike anyway , as I think it best to , not , let
any thief/criminal know what kind of security you have.
Example:
Many thief's are now being caught because they did not know there was a hidden camera recording them,
Every day in the News here in the San Francisco Bay Area there are 1-3 news segments of criminal's caught on tape , and within days
the same news channels report back that the Crim ... " Suspect " has now been caught .
the days of a in plain sight CCTV camera I think are weaning since the Crim's just use their Hoodies .
It is now the hidden cameras that are catching them.

To me it is becoming clear that the first line of defense should be a loud motion sensor alarm , that would scare off most thief's .
Most investigating news programs have shown that what Criminals fear the most , is being seen/observed . A loud sounding Alarm would
Draw attention to the thief in any public place! then a nearby person with a cell phone will record them.

Then the second line of security for the bike would a hidden GPS,
But who is making one specifically for bicycles ? ( light weight/small/tiny remote )

My local Ebike shophttp://www.e-bikesrus.com.au/membership/ has just secured the Dominos Pizza chains ebike fleet to build Up to 1000 bikes with Gps tracking and i start work tomorrow building these.
All i can tell you is they are a legal 48 volt system with a 12amp controller so far.

I put a pay one last all year sim and put $20 in it. http://www.lycamobile.us/en/

After 2 weeks act was 0. even though i only used a 8 text msgs. upon calling them i found that the tracker was pinging its mapper and exhausted all my credits pinging the chinese mapserver. In addition it is buggy in turn on and turn off.

My next solution is a refurbished freedom pop phone stuck inside the battery bag. Freedom pop phone is $25 and freedompop basic service is free

https://www.freedompop.com/offer/cse-zte-force/checkout

hide the phone inside battery. put a right angle usb cord plugged into phone and keep cell charged when you charge battery

Inside phone run lookout or other wheres my android to see where our phone and droid is.

Good to see gps hidden bike parts like lights now under 100$ Usd. too bad it sucked all your mobile data so quickly..
good work on finding and utilising using a free mobile phone plus service.

Not counting indirect protections, I've gone though what some might consider extreme measures to secure my trike.

1. Physical - mine's insanely expensive and weighs about 20lbs but has no equal (can't be jacked, picked, shimmed, bumped or non-hydraulic cut- must use sledge hammer with huge bottle of liquid nitrogen or grinder and I don't know of a battery grinder that will do it on 1 battery):
- Huge, Abloy 14KS hardened chain - https://securitysnobs.com/ABUS-Hardened-Alloy-Chain.html
- Abloy Protec2 PL 362 Shrouded Hardened Steel Padlock - https://securitysnobs.com/Abloy-Protec2-PL-362-Shrouded-Hardened-Steel-Padlock.html
- Locked to concrete floor with this ABUS Wall / Floor Heavy Duty Anchor Padlock Hasp - https://securitysnobs.com/ABUS-Wall-Floor-Heavy-Duty-Anchor-Padlock-Hasp.html

2. GPS locator: http://www.iotatracker.com/
- It's new & unproven, still delivering to kickstarter sponsors
- no recurring costs
- doesn't use the cell service
- uses your and other's home network with 1 base (yours) to cover something like a 6 mile radius (I *think* community coverage has yet to expand beyond San Francisco Bay Area, CA, USA)
- hidden on trike very well due to small size,
- geo fence eats battery within a week or so but without, lasts several weeks
- recharges with USB, might leave on trike indefinitely if I can wire it in
- has nice iPhone app, first non-beta (testflight) version is but a week or two old, still has small quirks and not all promised functionality is there yet
- can trigger beeper from phone but why bother when it clues them into where it is installed

Seen here (article "The Best Bike Lock Today"):
http://www.tested.com/tech/458286-best-bike-lock-today/

Bike thief states:
Q: What would he recommend for his mother?

A: A GPS embedded in the frame, he said. Apparently the NYPD uses them on bait bikes, and pros like him shake a frame, listening for a rattle, to identify them. He didn’t mention GPS like the Spybike that replaces the headset, but the ones people tape under a seat, such as the $120 Garmin GTU 10, with the $50 a year subscription fee? He tears those off and throws ‘em away.

Great find LockH!

Not sure about anyone else, but whenever I'm free or near a window I'm constantly distracted by wanting to see either my bicycle or my motorbikes.TrackR looks great, the video says it all :D. I've been looking for a cheap way to have that warm and fuzzy feeling by simply checking your phone. I use alarms/immobilizersand visual deterrents like disc and chain locks too, but for £55 for ease of mind for 3 bike and 1 motorbike, I'd pay that, in fact I just have :D.

I couldn't find any information about the communication and tracking mechanisms. I can only assume that the tracker relies on a peer-to-peer network of other users also using the app. If so, this would made it next to useless as this type of tracking device usually lacks the user base to aquire regular readings.

So. Watt came first? The chicken? Or the egg...

danielrlee - what you may have missed is that if the TrackR tracker goes out of bluetooth range it sets off an alert on your phone. Having checked online thats 200/300ft for Bluetooth 4. Thats ideal for parking up near work or popping into shops.

edit- My Scala Rider G9 Powerset was good for just under a mile on bluetooth, not sure if it's 3 or 4 though. So i'd imagine 200/300ft maybe on the conservitive side.
When they arrive I'll review it.

I am agreeing with Danielrlee on this, I don't think its value for money and is at the very least scamish..
Looks a lot like the one I was talking about here but under a different name..

This seems to be a common theme now on Kickstater/indigogo where there are about 5 different named products with exact same featured abilities under different campaigns, the videos are either slick complete with cute music or a tad crude to make it look honest..

That video starting at 58seconds in shows it off working under the same systems/methods as the $3 one on ebay using bluetooth.. As the guy only walks for like 30 meters from his lost bike location to find the bike and its conveniently hidden behind a wood fence and not concrete so it wouldn't block the signal..

The only one that hasn't proven to be a scam yet is this one.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HB-DKO1Xmk

That's all very well, but what good is it when you're then unable to track it once out of range?

The communication infrastructure has to come before users will adopt it.

Would you have ever bought a cellular phone before the cell towers had been put in place?

TheBeastie - Like the clip, although I'd be so proud of the pup I'd want to track him too :D.

You really need to get an item for your personal needs, for me if the TrackR goes out of range a quick call to the security office and the damn thieving contractors will hopefully be stopped, unless they can carry a 45kg vector over a 3 meter barb wire topped fence :).

Using an old phone with a data only sim, but at £7 a month it was quite pricey and charging the phone a nause even with DC-DC you had to open the side panel to check the battery level. I have to admit the UK reviews seems low, but for £11 a piece I'm willing to try it out. I can't really see any difference (except you can change the battery) between the Tile, Nut, Lupo etc.. and they all get half decent reviews. In my opinion people see GPS and believe WOW i can find *_____* not realizing it's Crowd sourced info. Also, crowd sourcing would work better in a more population dense country, alot of misconceptions, 1000 sales in USA vs UK which would cover a greater land mass?!

:) Perhaps I'm an "early adopter"... In computer terms, playing with desk-sized computers in the daze of MS-DOS and CPM and Fortran and Cobol. Running dial-up modems and debating with others whether to continue to let folks connect at 300 bits per second. In recreational boating (sailing) terms, toddling around on "high speed" boats that had more than one hull and not needing a centerboard (well, they have more than one little ones) or a heavy keel. And the "infrastructure" ("traditional" sailing clubs) lacked facilities as well. We had to launch our "catamarans" off trailers at beaches.

GPS seller here claims "within 100ft range". Being an Urban Guy myself, just 100 feet distance puts me within range of many thousands of folks passing every day (I live on a very busy "arterial" road). And these trackers are getting common enough that folks are buying them to install in their backpacks and on their pets.

So I have high hopes this tech will "take off". :)

Fido a division of Rogers has a Pre-Paid plan where you dont even pick a plan, let it slide, $0.40/min talk and $0.30 per text. Get this incoming text is FREE!!!!

Its a little known fact that you can do that, I dont think Fido is anything special in regards to this type of plan. Their customer service is regular 9-5 Eastern Time Zone, Nigerians usually answer with a North American name like Bill or Bob or Sue.

Prepaid website
http://www.fido.ca/web/page/portal/Fido/PrepaidPlans/Plans
Under "By the minute" is what I term....The "Let it slide" Plan.
Says right there unlimited incoming text. Which is good!
No monthly fee, except for the $0.75 emergency fee.

Its a free plan, its a pay per use plan. So they want to snag you into $0.40/min talk and $0.30/outgoing text.
I use these guys a lot, but tend to switch the plan over to Bell network Virgin Mobile. Fido has good phone numbers depending on the geographical address you put in.
