A small Denver, Colorado manufacturer has rolled out the first prototype of a new all-electric aircraft, suggesting the same revolution that is currently sweeping through the auto industry may soon become airborne.

The Sunflyer, the brainchild of engineer and pilot George Bye and his Aero Electric Aircraft Corporation (AEAC), is designed to be the perfect training aircraft with three hours of endurance and a 30-minute recharging time.

Great name too. From an aero viewpoint, they kept the design very conventional, but also very low drag. As if they didn't want to get bogged down in reinventing the wheel (or the airplane) but concentrate on the electric drive aspects, good for them. I've been around similar aircraft, ICE powered though, these low drag plastic (OK, composite) modern LSA type (light sport aircraft) aircraft perform spectacularly well on little power, being so low drag. Not my cup of tea though, as I am more into the bush type aircraft , which inherently are higher drag. Giant tires alone probably have as much drag as the Sunflyer entire airframe, seriously!

Looks much like the Lancair and the Pulsar, nothing gives a size scale but I'm guessing it's not terribly small. Electrics have great training possibilities for the days that you spend two hours flying the pattern and landing, no need to feel nervous about getting far from the airport. By the time you're stage 3 you'd be completely gas again.
