great to see a major motorcycle manufacturer with such a strong racing program showing commitment to continued ev development.. now ktm will have the kids electric and the freeride electric. maybe next ktm will do a full size electric dirt bike to compete with alta redshift, etc.. which bikes might then face extinction next..

I did a quick search and found a posted about it here as well :

Supercross motorcycle racing to debut first EV class and tap startups to go digital ..

"Motorcycle racing series Supercross will add e-motos and more digitization to its franchise (aided by startups) in the near future, according to Director of Operations David Prater.

The sport — where riders race high-performance machines on jump-filled stadium dirt tracks — currently fields only gas-powered two-wheelers.

This fall, Supercross looks to launch its first EV class, starting with the earliest of early adapters: seven to eight-year-olds.

The series plans to convert its Junior Racing program, sponsored by manufacturer KTM, from gas to electric.

“They’ve been working on an electric 50cc equivalent motorcycle and their goal is to launch that in October,” Prater told TechCrunch. “We haven’t one-hundred-percented it yet, but it’s fairly close and we’re…going to race that electric KTM in October at the Monster Energy Cup..."

I hope the let them go in one series against OSET and Kuberg .... The more competition the better.

Once honda does an electric replacement for the CRF150RB I'll be pulling the trigger. They dominate the local mini supermoto class which I race in.
I'very thought of doing a DIY 15kw build if I can find an expensive chassis. I only need enough battery for 10 minutes mostly flat out. So perhaps 2kw/h.

Get Ready For A High-End Bajaj And KTM Electric Motorcycles ..

"Bajaj Auto’s executive director has once again confirmed that the Indian factory’s working to produce an electric motorcycle with its Austrian partner KTM – and this time he’s revealed it’ll be a high-end machine..

The move comes as the Indian government is pushing for the widespread use of electric vehicles, as it looks to curb pollution and reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels.."

COBRA GETTING IN ON THE ELECTRIC 50-SIZED PARTY :

"U.S. motorcycle manufacturer Cobra MOTO is announcing the debut of two radically new products at the 2019 AIMExpo presented by Nationwide next week.

The entire Cobra team has been working incredibly hard,” said Sean Hilbert, Cobra’s president. “We are never going to stray from our core mission of manufacturing the finest youth competition vehicles in the world, and we have been laser focused on the emerging technologies that will help define our evolving market into the future.”

Hilbert continued, “The all-new products we are debuting this year at the AIMExpo will revolutionize youth racing on two wheels.”

Cobra will first unveil its incredible CX-E5. This is the company’s first battery electric motorcycle, and it is designed to compete in the future Electric Limited youth classes in AMA competition. This incredible minicycle features similar performance to the current Cobra 50cc internal combustion engine offerings, a quick-change battery, and several operation modes so parents can meter out performance according to skill level. This model will make its debut in the 2021 model year.

Second on the agenda will be Cobra’s first entry into the e-bicycle market. The “Iron Man” model e-bike is designed as both a training tool for hard-core minicycle racers and as a race bicycle in its own right. “We’re doing essentially the same thing in the e-bicycle market as we did in the minicycle market nearly 30 years ago,” said Hilbert. “We’re forging new territory by bringing to market a high-end competition e-bike for youth racers...”

yeah I noticed that also.. didn't have a picture of the electric cobra yet since its slated for 2021 production.. but it will likely be on display at upcoming industry trade shows so stay tuned.. the bigger picture is the end of petrol bikes for the junior race classes with the major brands and race organizations on board..

"Owned by the Pierer Mobility group (the parent company of KTM), the Swedish brand Husqvarna will expand its catalog with a more complete range of motorcycles from 2021. In a presentation for investors, we discover some of the future Husqvarna models, including electric scooters and dirt bikes .. Husqvarna is working on more powerful versions of its electric motorcycles to widen its zero emission range. An engine that lends itself well to the cross and enduro market .."

The third bike down under E-scooters is looking very interesting. Like a sleeker Light-Bee.

Personally I'd like to see some electric "play bike" options inline with the KTM Freeride or possibly for the 150cc motocross class.

KTM, HONDA & YAMAHA AGREE TO CREATE UNIVERSAL BATTERIES FOR ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES ...

"KTM Press Release: “Mattighofen, March 1, 2021 – KTM AG announces today that the company has signed a Letter of Intent with Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd and Piaggio & C SpA to set up a Swappable Batteries Consortium for Motorcycles and Light Electric Vehicles.

In the context of the Paris Climate Agreement and the development of electromobility, the founding members of the consortium believe that the availability of a standardized swappable battery system would both promote the widespread use of light electric vehicles and contribute to a more sustainable life-cycle management of batteries used in the transport sector...

Stefan Pierer, KTM AG CEO: “Sustainability is one of the key drivers to the future of mobility and electrification will play a major role in achieving this goal. For powered two-wheelers the constraints of electric drivetrains regarding range, charging time and initial cost are still evident. To overcome these challenges and provide a better customer experience, a swappable battery system based on international technical standards will become a viable solution. Considering the entire lifecycle, a widespread application of batteries compliant with a common standard will support secondary use as well as circular economy. We are glad to be part of the Consortium as we strive towards our goals in the e-mobility sector..."

with europe, asia, california, now virginia (and other states to follow?) headed toward zero emission vehicle standards.. I'd predict greater chance of failure of brands that don't offer electric vehicle options that meet some common standards.. probably be necessary for motocross racing, etc so it's a level "machine" playing field, except in unlimited classes..

Three major market competitors agreeing even a common voltage is more than a little unlikely.
But then to get them to agree a common configuration spec for cells, pack size, component suppliers etc ...all the things that would be required for a “Pack Swap” system to function...is not going to happen for many of the same reasons that it didnt work with cars.
The battery is too muh of a performance factor to “standardise with a market competitor
If you have paid $2-3000 for a nice new pack, ..how willing are you going to be to swap it within a few days for some other pack of unknown condition ?
As for serious competition.. well that would be under the series cotrollers
