MY E-Scooter could use some NOISE !!

Postby MrKang » Thu May 06, 2010 3:01 am

Do you have the same experience ?

While driving with your electric scooter..people on bicycles don't here you coming from behind them!
That's why i want to build in an extra sound option to have some cool motor noise!

What do you think about that cool sound effect from 'The Jetsons'! when there little pacecrafts hover by...
that's a nice sound..please give me your idea for a cool sound to put on your e-scooter

this is a triggered MP3 board which has 18 trigge inputs.
MP3 can easily be stored on a microSD card.

now the question is...when and how are we going to trigger these sounds.
First on startup and then on a certain speed or while breaking ..

Heh, I heard and recognized the Jetsons' pacercraft sound on an episode of Futurama last night. That would be a hoot if electric vehicles adopted the sound universally.

Do people on bicycles hear other bicycles when they aproach them from behind?

At the TTXGP event at Mid-Ohio last year we were discussing diferent sound options. One idea we came up with was to have a variety of different sounds that you could toggle between. Some days your vehicle could sound like a race bike, some days a harley, some days a jet engine, some days the jetsons, etc etc.

Or, then again, you can do the new ghetto 'card in the spokes'. Some people are now putting CDs into their spokes.n

Damn... out of stock.

Ja, triggers: (?)

Power on/off
Contactor close/open
Current level
Low voltage

For sounds, you could steal clips from a million windoze desktop themes and build themes for different moods/locations.

Can the pitch of the sound change with motor speed? That would be cooler. Something like a digital sampling keyboard. You could have a switch to change sounds. I wonder if they make a little synthesizer board?

If you have a brushless motor, you can simply attach a speaker to two of the motor phase wires, or between one phase wire and battery negative. Since you have like 1kw available there, the speaker will need a resistor in series or perhaps a non-polar capacitor also in series to limit the power (or it could be really, really loud). It won't sound like the Jetsons, but it will make some kind of noise.

When I was a kid I used to run over beer or soda cans. If you run over the middle of the can it will stick to your tire until it hits the fork and then it starts making a sound very similar to a dirt bike

It's the bell,

Or you ride along the whole time making the "brum brum" sound.

When I pull my kid in the trailer - sometimes he decides we are in the "fire bike" and makes the "wee-oo-wee-oo" siren sound. That sort of works.

Even better is when he has the harmonica - but then people don't get out of the way so much as stop dead wondering where the doppler-harmonica sound is coming from.

but a bell is really effective.

After further searching and brainstorming i thought of building a analogue synthesizer or buy one cheap .
these sounds can be tuned with pots which are connected to the throttle ouput for example.

i found this cheap interesting kit.

Yes, and no. While I can "sneak up" on folks in traffic they will turn their heads at much greater distances in the parks. In other words the noise of the chain drive etc are only buried in the ambient street sounds. It's not that the EV is too quiet, it's that the city/traffic is too noisy. Personally I don't wish to make the situation worse than it already is. I only need to snap the spring-loaded hand brake handles to announce myself behind others which is a "bicycle sound" all are already familiar and comfortable with... I used to use a bicycle bell but concluded that I only needed it for situations I created myself. Having said this I do look fwd. to having high fidelity speakers on board and a docking station for an mp3 player :D

I want a piece of the sound track from "TOP GUN", where the fighter jet is coming in and as it gets closer, it gets louder, then blows on by with the jet exhaust sound raising the hackles on the back of your neck.

Now, THAT'S COOL.

easy SD/MMC/USB port for mp3 files. and aux input for my E-V noise..
Most of my rides are routed through easy and quite bike routes.
If i see a bicycle in front of me i don't want to honk and let them scare.
If i have this sound which you easily can hear in my neighbourhood the people in front of me
don't get suprised and move to the right automatically.

most of the time they don't hear me and then i hae to honk he horn and then they feel like attacked by a sneaky scooter vandalist.

1+ Get a bell for people and bikes. Add a horn for cars. Other sounds, while seemingly cool, will only confuse people and result in someone turning right into you. Bells aren't offensive and are mandatory on bikes in some locales, so it seems like a good standard that we should all get used to and promote.

@TylerDurden: I didn't read the user comments on that one. :( Well, it's likely that the chips and stuff all (or mostly) work, just that there is a bug in the PCB or wiring design. The chips could probably still be used to create the sound effects, if the bug could be worked out. :)

Get a big brushless outrunner. Then it sounds kinda like a jet-engine crossed with a vacuum cleaner as you ride, but it's as nice sound overall. :)

I think it would be great if the electronics guys here figured out the best way to make a noise-generating device. Especially if it allows the user to download a selection of sounds you want from off of the web.

If some one works on this, please post the schematics and parts needed to work with 36V, 48V and 72V...

It would be kind of cool if all electric motors made the Jetsons sound, but people seem to hear me as I approach on my Electric scooter. The drivetrain or chain noise is just enough for pedestrians (on the sidewalk) to hear me, as I see them cock their head to the left as if to say...What is that? I also have an Incredibell that I ding ding when comming up on to the back of cyclists.

@spinningmagnets: There are a number of types of the main part of this already around like the one posted above that is even multi-triggerable. :)

http://LadyAda.net has some projects that could be used for it too.

All you need to power any of them is a small DC-DC converter, and a lot of celphone chargers already laying around in your home or local thrift stores could do this.

Then a little amplified speaker to project the sound.

So all that needs to be done is packaging them up together in a little box with wires on the end to plug into your pack.
