UPDATE: LIPO Goped ESR750 80-100 HXT w/ Kelly

Postby E-racer » Mon Aug 16, 2010 5:32 pm

After alot of the use of the search button here on ES I concocted the first stage of my RC ESR build. I made a quick set of adapter plates with the CNC plasma to throw the motor on the ESR. Now that I have a reliable/performance drive line I am going to build a new vehicle from the ground up. Like many others I started with sensorless Turnigy controllers that just could not hold up. Im very happy with the KBL and halls. I appreciate the wealth of info on this forum and thank everyone for their help! This is one fun ride!

This Video is @ 60% motor speed and 40% current limiting (I'm now at 80%/55% starting to think about active cooling)

NICE! What's the top speed of those bad boys? How far can you go on a charge?

Top speed is about 45mph. They'll do about 6 miles riding conservatively @ 30ish mph. I want to do a pack of turnigy Lipo just haven't quite figured out how to charge them properly yet.

That's badass man! You never clip that motor on the ground in tight turns right? I love the sound, real nice adaptation.

Really nice work!

That looks like so much fun!! I noticed from your video you are getting quite close to hitting the motor saver on that side? bet you must have scraped that along the ground on more than 1 occasion?

I have always fancied one of those scooters, now I have a son i have an excuse to buy one to play around with!! on the lipo front they are so easy and cheap to get now, get yourself over to hobbyking and grab a few packs, there are loads of options for you in terms of capacity, voltage etc, charging is so easy just use buzzers for low battery like others do, no need for fancy BMS.

Nicely done! A suggestion though, rather than looking towards additional cooling, since you're not using all available motor speed, just drop the teeth of the front sprocket, let the motor speed go to 100%, and the motor will spend more time in the higher efficiency area (these motors want high RPMs), and you will make a lot less heat. This is a fix to the heat problem that also increases range and performance. :)

Also, I don't know what temps you're seeing, but that motor is designed to be just fine running at temps hotter than you want to rest your hand upon.

Yes the motor has scrubbed a few times but I've gotten good at compensating for it. Ive got the 180kv version of the motor because I originally planned sensorless controllers. The ESR served as a great test bed for RC brushless stress testing. I assure anyone who doesn't believe these motors will hold up are wrong. With no suspension and the motor scrubbing the ground a couple times, plus a pretty serious wipeout the motor hasn't had any issues. My main use of the scoot is for on campus transportation. Standing up is the way I feel comfortable blasting around campus. With my knowledge gained on the ESR build I'm going to start from scratch on a new scoot stay tuned! Turnigy Lipo will 100% be powering the next scoot!

School is starting up so its time to start on my new scoot! I have a Marzocchi Fork w/ hydraulic brakes off a Husqvarna 50cc dirtbike 10" wheels. I will be using the Kelly KBL off my ESR and an 80-100B. The scooter has 5" of travel front and rear. Its folds by releasing the shock mount on the swing arm. Im planning on using 4 Turnigy 6s 5000mah Long packs for 44V10Ah. The downtube and swing arm will be 4130 chromoly and the deck will be aluminum. I will be using a CNC plasma for all the plates. Stay tuned for 3D models in the next few weeks. Should I put this new build in its own thread or leave it here?

Pretty cool design for a scooter.

Was just trying to understand how the deck will sustain your weight while being independent of the swing arm.

The deck is contrained to the down tube when the scoot is unfolded. folded the deck and swing arm will stack next to each other while the rear shock is folded up in the swing arm.

I've decided the ESR has proven to be completely reliable under hard abuse. My ultimate goal was to eventually build a small motorcycle |I can commute 4 miles to school on. Ive ditched the idea of the scoot and gone to a lightweight street bike using DH MTB equipment. The RC airplane lightweight and performance compared to a modern DH MTB's similar attributes seems like a complete win to me.
BUILD THREAD: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=24228

FUTURE Stand Ups,
The ESR will be getting retired. Its Kelly controller (KBL48201) is going to my E-Bike, and its frame the garbage can. The frame has been the weakest link in the ESR project. My friends and I have broken 3 of them :-(. With that being said I have a Goped GSR25 that is itching for a Brushless. Im planning on swapping that GSR with 12s 5ah of lipo and a kelly ebike controller http://kellycontroller.com/kbs4812150a24-48v-mini-brushless-dc-controller-p-528.html Basically a lightweight HP power board.

The ESR is done. I decided to build the Kona Stinky instead of the DH scoot though. The 80-100 has impressed me enough to be confident in building a reliable commuter powered by that motor.

Phase 2 is complete. Scoot now has 12s2p HK Lipo and a Kelly mini brushless controller (KBS) the scooter now requires no deck spacers :-D

the video sounds like you are using regen for braking?

if so i noticed that it is adjustable (amount of regen) is it enough to lock the back wheel or is it rather weak even at max settings?

cheers
