Suzuki gets an upgrade from Sony Lithium to Turnigy Lipo

Postby drewjet » Mon Nov 22, 2010 4:50 pm

I have put about 7500 miles on my Suzuki SP200 and my batteries are getting tired. I had Sony VT 26650 cells in it run as 18S12P for approx 75 volts and 32AH. Reality was closer to 25AH. It has gotten to the point that I could not make the 8.5 mile commute to work at a safe speed. So time to upgrade. Hobby King was running a special no shipping sale in the US so jumped on 20 of the 5S 5000MaH 20C Turnigys http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=15008 Price to my door $827. These will be arranged 20S5P for 85 volts and 25AH.

Here is a pic of the old Sony cells 55 Lbs

I have about 60 miles on it since the upgrade and am loving it. I can feel the less weight. and the acceleration is much better. I can go full speed all the way home and still only use about 12AH. Range should be close to 20 miles, especially if I go a bit easy on the throttle, but what fun is that.

Awesome bike. Do you have a build thread for the whole bike and if so can you post a link? 8)

Wow...and all the cells were good? I bought 6 3S packs from HC last month...2 had dead 1 cell from the start. How do you charge them? Did yo P the balance leads too?

Thanks for the compliments. I did not do a build thread for the bike. However in my signature is a link to it on EV Album. If you have any specific questions, I would be happy to answer them here.

Luckily all125 cells were good. Its a bit tough to see in the picks, but yes all 6 ballance leads of the 5 pack group are paralleled. They come out to a RS 232 connector. I use an FMA Balance Pro6 Lipo Charger to charge them, 1 for each pack of 5 cells. Unfortunately they are out of production and no longer available.
