Freeman Transport

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:57 pm

Montana-based company hand-building bikes in the USA. Using Columbus steel tubing and S-and-S couplings the bikes can be easily disassembled and packed into their signature waxed canvas and leather carrying case. The case’s 29 X 29 inch dimensions ensure that the bike can be checked onto airplanes with no oversized baggage fee. This unique feature allows for easy assembly/disassembly – with only one simple tool to put them back together – making it easy to ride to and from the airport.

The company was founded in 2006 by the artist and designer team of Nathaniel Freeman and Benjamin Ferencz, both of whom travel frequently and were frustrated by the expense of shipping their bikes and the lack of quality options in the travel-bike industry. Refusing to go bikeless, Freeman and Ferencz decided to design it themselves.

In addition to bikes, Freeman also makes products for the traveler – hats, clothing, leather goods and bike accessories. Committed to USA manufacturing and sustainable materials, Freeman Transport strives to reduce the impact their lifestyles have on the world.

Hufnagel Cycles

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:02 pm

As a small boy, Jordan Hufnagel constructed miniature bicycles out of twigs, corn husks, and paraffin wax in order to traverse the expansive Indiana maize labyrinths in which he was raised. His creations seldom held fast for longer than a trip to the general store, and so he looked for better ways to clench two wheels together. When steel was invented, Jordan spent long nights in the township 'fraidy hole, teaching himself to weld, sometimes blindfolded. His family was callous and unsupportive of his efforts, often force-feeding him lumpy and tepid gruel. When he was old enough, Jordan stuffed two pairs of jeans, a t-shirt, and a broken music box into a satchel and hid himself in the cargo bay of a mail plane. The aircraft landed in Portland, OR, with Jordan emaciated and nearly frozen in its great aluminum belly. He wandered into the rain and through the slick city streets until he passed out under a picnic table beside the Willamette river. A group of schoolchildren woke him and fed him apples and blackberries from their sack lunches. To show his gratitude, Jordan built them all bicycles. He has been in business ever since.

Ira Ryan Cycles

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:06 pm

I started riding bikes when I was 12 as a way to get around the gravel roads outside Iowa City, Iowa. I started racing when I was 16after seeing the Tour de France on television. At 17, I started working as a mechanic at my first bike shop job. I was hooked. And for the next twelve years I continued to wrench, tour, race and commute, constantly exploring disciplines, physical limitations and the incredible geography around me.

In 2000 I moved to Portland, Oregon where I took a job as a bicycle courier for five and a half years - the last two of which I helped start and run Portland’s only bike messenger collective. Cold, wet and dark mornings in the winter and endless hours of sunshine in the summer. For years I worked all week to ride and race on the weekends. In 2003, I finished second in an unsanctioned “rando-cat” from San Francisco to Portland, completing the 750 mile route in 4 days.

Over the years, miles and with over 80 frames built, I have refined my own personal style of cycling routed in speed, distance and self reliance.

My experiences as a cyclist, my style and my love for the machines that make it all possible culminated in the creation of Ira Ryan Cycles which unoficially debuted in 2005 when I built my first frame and raced it 325 miles over 24 hours to win the inaugural Trans-Iowa Race. Gliding over moon lit gravel for hours and hours on a bike I made with my own hands, to win the Trans-Iowa, is an experience that will forever influence my riding and commitment to the craft of bicycle building.

I continue to race and ride what I build and believe the ride quality of a hand built steel bicycle frame is the best in the world.

Over the last couple years I have ridden and built frames for the Rapha Continental where we have documented some of the most amazing rides in America. In the late summer of 2009, I have had the opportunity to race in the first ever Cent Cols Challenge in the French Alps completing 100 cols in 10 days of riding 180 to 200 kilometers a day. This chance to race in France further honed what I put into each and every bike I build.

The bikes I build reflect the growing urge to make cycling a part of everyday life. Bicycles made for work, for travel, and to carry you through your day can be more than just practical. It is my passion to combine traditional methods and materials with a contemporary view towards building bicycles that are above all useful, elegant, and timeless.

MAP bicycles is owner and builder Mitch Pryor. Located in Portland, Oregon, Mitch builds fine handmade steel bicycles one at a time and has learned the craft of framebuilding from master builder and painter Doug Fattic. Mitch has refined and expanded on these skills to include rack building with the help of fellow builder Joseph Ahearne.

Metrofiets – Artisan frames, from Portland, Oregon

Jamie Nichols and Phillip Ross are the founders and co-owners of Metrofiets, LLC.

What makes a Metrofiets? Patience and time. We measure, bend, hammer, file and polish steel – turning it into a work of art. The kind of art you can ride around town on. The kind of art that turns heads and leaves people wanting more.

Our designs are inspired by Danish and Dutch cargo bikes as well as the classic bicycle styles produced in the US during the 1930’s, 40’s and 50’s. Drawing on that grand tradition, we create bikes that are made from lightweight steel and use modern components. We like clean lines, curves and things that work without a lot of fuss.

Outlier Incorporated

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:18 pm

We firmly believe that the bicycle is the best form of urban transit for the 21st century, and our clothing is designed to make that fact even more true. Your clothing should work as well on a bicycle as it does on the subway or in a car, without shouting to the world "I'm a cyclist." We are a clothing company first, not a cycling company. But we're a clothing company that designs simple, good looking and hard wearing garments for a world where bikes are a part of your daily life.

In many ways Outlier is a child of the Garment District. When we started this company neither of us really knew how to make clothing. We just knew that we couldn't find the garments that we wanted and if no one else was going make them then we would have to do it ourselves. We began hunting down the best technical fabrics in the world and brought them to small factories in New York City where craftsmanship still reigns supreme. Through a constant process of experimentation and refinement we started producing a line of goods we can believe in.

Our goal is always to produce future classics. Garments that work as well half a century down the road as they do today. We believe in making the highest quality garments possible and we sell them at the best possible prices. We refuse to compromise on quality and we refuse to compromise on ethics. We use the best materials for the job and we make sure they meet the highest environmental standards. We keep production values sky high while keeping the work local.

Rivendell Bicycle Works

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:32 pm

From late '84 to late '94 I (Grant) designed and spec'd bicycles and worked on catalogues for the U.S. division of Bridgestone Cycle, Japan's largest bike maker. Bridgestone closed the U.S. office after ten years of no profit, when the dollar-to-yen exchange rate plummeted to the point where it became impossible to even break even. I was 40, and started Rivendell with $89,000, a mix of retirement money, savings, loans, and money raised by selling stock to friends.

True to the cliche, Rivendell was in my garage for two years. Now we have 5,000 square feet at about $0.90 per square foot, one of the cheaper rents in town. We like it here a lot. It's easy to get to, close to good food and riding, and it feels like home, except that summertime temperatures average 90F and are often over 100F, and winter days rarely get above 57F. We drive home this point before we hire anybody new. We've been profitable three of the past fifteen years, but cash flow is neutral. Sales are about $2.8 million dollars per year. We're just breaking even, there are no top-heavy salaries, and we fret a lot during slow weeks (and months). I do, at least.

Our mission is to make things that wouldn't be made if we weren't here, to offer an alternative to racing-centric bikes and parts, and to espouse a different approach to riding.

We are two guys who met in a bike shop...
We found out that we shared a common path to working in a bike shop: As young boys we loved riding our bikes and drawing. We found jobs working in bike shops. After a few too many years of turning wrenches, we decided that art school was a good idea. We each graduated with degrees in Fine Art Painting, and realized we were perfectly equipped for working in a bike shop.

Signal Cycles was born out of the creative fire that burns in each of us. We love using our hands and brains to build beautiful machines that get raced on, or ridden to exotic places. Bicycles are the answer.

Six-Eleven Bicycle Co.

Postby Lock » Fri Dec 10, 2010 7:42 pm

Inspired by the Great 611 J-Class steam locomotive, Six-Eleven Bicycle Co. perfectly pairs performance and artful design to create the ultimate in lugged and fillet brazed custom steel bicycles.

Having studied under the esteemed Koichi Yamaguchi, builder Aaron Dykstra hand cuts and miters every tube, ensuring matchless precision in every frame. From frame to fork and stem, each build begins with a conversation, matching the rider to a carefully selected combination of tubes and materials. By fully understanding the rider’s style, Aaron crafts a balance of strength and comfort that can only come from custom design. Evoking the ingenuity and craftsmanship that made the Great 611 legendary, Six-Eleven Bicycle Co. guarantees each owner the ride of a lifetime.
