..should not be necessary assuming you chose the right controller ?
..but ....thinking "out of the box".. do you really need a controller on a brushed E drag bike ?
.. could you not just use progressive voltage switching..?? IE.. 10S, ..18S, ..24S or whatever suits.
could save some kilo's and $$$'s if it worked. ?

ive tried coming up with a solid state controller, even a resistor controller like a golf cart - its possible and would give the motor a direct feed of juice, i have several schematics for one, but it will require you to build your own pc clad...

but at the end im happy with the new kelly controller...

To make it consistent and controllable, we used a timer and had a second contactor. That way you can still use the controller
to ride up to the line and back and have a bunch of power for the run.

I have a schematic if you want.

i have good news and bad news;

the bad news is the new wheel is too big, the good news is, it leads me to a new project. instead of the forward trike, how about an electric chopper...

The bike will be a different beast with the Mars ans LiPO , i hope you have full set of racing leathers

actually i do have a leather jacket for riding - but i would like to find a set of leathers that are black and green... seems hard to find...

i also found a wheel for it - i went to the yamaha dealer here in OKC, so i got a lot of work to do this week to get it all mounted.

i will have to spread the hard tail by 1 inch...

im still going with your advice Kim, lithium bats, i will have to buy one or two a week, but i will finally get them - i believe i have to get eight of the 22.4 packs, or do i need more?

spring racing is here and im running late already... :|

Very cool!

Hope it is strong enough for the RT motor.... :)

Will this have a racing or standard tall tire?

Get the widest you can!

Carefull make sure it has the largest foot print on the ground you can get.
Simply going to the widest tire possible will cause the sidewall to roll under and cause more of a curve in the center of the tire giving you less contact patch with the pavement!!!

this is the tire i was thinking of - it comes in a P,S,and H rating...

P rated - up to 93 mph
S rated - up to 112 mph
H rated - up to 130 mph

if this bike goes over a 100 mph, you'll hear me screaming my arse off in fear...

Tire performance is a tricky deal. With an ICE motor you want the tire to spin up to the speed where the torque curve gets beefy and then you want it to bite. With electric drive you have torque right away, so you'd just want to get a compound that bites hard right away?

I just remember being consevative with my 1985 "R" compound street tire at the strip because it was expensive and wore out quickly. I only spun it briefly on the way to the line and that was mainly to heat the plugs up on my two-stroker.

For drag racing I'd worry more about getting something light weight than the speed rating. Its not going to be rolling very long.

The smaller a wheel is, the stronger it is all other things equal. Plus dirtbikes wheels tend to be strong. Looks strong anyway!

Speed rating won't matter. It's about sustained speed tire cooling. Generally worse speed rating tires make better drag tires from less belts keeping it more supple.

Drag hondas often run the "do not exceed 55mph" spare tire doughnuts on the back for weight savings, and trap over 150mph on them.

If you're gearing for 100mph (meaning no starting torque), you don't need a wide tire, even a bicycle tire would work fine.

Also, the track will hook like no other surface. A good track is suck-your-shoes-off sticky on the starting line. I don't think wheelspin will be an issue with any scooter/motorcycle tire.

If you are still planning on the 48v class, and with your 400A limited controller,... you would really need 4 of the 6S Nanotech packs ...2P, 12S.
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... duct=14616
That would give you all the power you need, with more packs just adding weight.
Of course you could use another 4 to make up a 2nd pack as a back up !

Voltage will not matter as much but for top speed. Amps will get things moving. This is for drag racing.
72 would be much better, but a soggy turd?

Everything else being equal, doesn't applying a higher voltage to a motor cause it to draw more amps?

where do you get a mini drag wheel?

as far as the mars motor, this motor will kick arse... i figure i will get at least 60mph out of it, any faster i might want to consider a tougher frame, but we will see here pretty quick, hopefully in a month and half... Kim used 8 packs so i think i will go with his set up, i have the room to place that many...

Dont worry Ed - this motor will prove itself soon enough.

i must remind again im staying in the 48 volt class, any higher then i might as well build a motorcycle class drag bike and i just dont have that kind of money... there are those that are 72 volt class and have thousands of dollars into them, theres no way i can compete with them...
