Anyone got a link to the rulebook? I'm curious how they define the "48 volt" class limits. Your 12s lipo would have to be undercharged to exactly 4.00v per cell I'm guessing? Or is it based on SLA voltages where each 12 volts really means 14 volts..

Your call, ....but i suspect Kim is using more batterys for a longer RANGE.
you dont need the range ( quarter mile ?) , and you certainly dont need unnecessary weight as it is critical to your performance.
so you will be taking $400 worth of excess battery along for a ride just to make you slower ?

well i appreciate your comments, dont forget im still in the learning phase of EV's. it just seems no matter what i do you all call it the wrong the choices i make - what do you have... you all never made wrong choices to learn how to do it right before...

never the less i will learn and i will succeed...

also dont forget i have little knowledge of the lithium batteries - if you say four bats then i'll start with that, if i feel i need more then i will continue with the eight pack - its just hard for me to conceive that the little batteries have that much umph...

i was just following the example that kim showed...

Hey, some people want to make beautifully done but painfully slow drag vehicles KiM.

He could have run on 100v, but didn't want to be too fast. He could have had a battery the size of a small loaf of bread capable of way more power and faster re-charge, but he didn't want that. He could have got a controller capable of doing a voltage that he could grow into when he gets tired of a sleepy 48v, but he didn't want that either.

But, what he did make is a very nice fit-n-finish fast looking vehicle. It's kinda the opposite of what I make. Brutally fast awful looking things with no consideration to fit-n-finish.

i guess the point of this machine is still missed here this machine is my experiment to use as a learning device and have fun with it in the process, not to break world records or to be brutally fast, "which im sure you fellows could definitely build", hell i'll be lucky if it breaks 50 mph and thats OK.

i chose a 48 volt system because its safe and affordable unit to play with - if amps is torque and volts is speed, then yes i could have built a system like that - but i chose to build a unit that can used in a street machine, boosting it to a 72 volt chopper to be used as a daily transportation...

i tried to apologize to you and you still prefer to be petty, and that makes me feel sorry for you and to feel for those others who are trying to learn how to build a EV just to be greeted by rude and hateful remarks... but i can leave here knowing i have a EV that works and is on the street doing its thing and that i did meet some awesome people here...

so forgive me, im going to ride my grocery getter and have some fun with it - ahsta la tacos machachos - good day...

Different folks, different goals. Most excited and committed to their personal visions, also as it should be. These works of art and technology, do not get built without the emotional commitment to form.

Some of the best folks here are the most passionate! Those two factors often go together with folks who are breaking boundaries, be it exploring a new territory, or understanding a new technology. We would be nowhere without the passion... if you think of it in that light, then it doesn't ever bother you...

I can't tell you the number of times I've had "passionate" exchanges with my colleagues as we "searched for the truth" in one technology or another. I remember in particular when we got a new director about 20 years ago and he though I and the Chief of Materials and Processes were bitter enemies as he watched our heated discussion over stress corrosion cracking of a certain alloy... (can you get nerdier than that? ) He was shocked when he found out John and I were very, very good friends who socialized together... but when we explored the technological boundaries of safe flight, the gloves were off...

the sad thing is i really like kim, because i think he is a very talented fabricator and has a lot of experience with EV's, and i understand he comes off strong on folks, but it just seems he is going over board with his comments, which makes it harder to appreciate him... and i have to say the same about liveforphysics...

it makes me feel like i would be better off keeping my projects to myself and my mouth shut and just hang out at candy store begging for candy...

Yeh Luke was a little rude Allen. But if you ever meet him you will find he is a very generous and positive person. He harassed me about my car having a red-line at 6200 rpm (stock srt4) when I was helping him get his Honda civic race car to Oregon (>10000 rpm redline built k20) But I knew it was all in fun. My srt4 serves a purpose like your drag bike. For me its still reliable 180000 km on it and close to stock and its my daily drive to drive out of town for work so I need it so keep running!
All I'm trying to say is Take the comments with a grain of salt we all need more people building electric vehicles slow or fast to help get the electric revolution off the ground!

That made me laugh!!! Arlo is right, Luke is pushing the envelope, so about half the time, his inventions go "poof!" The other half, you have to look for him with a telescope, he is so far ahead. That is how progress is made.

I wasn't referring to anyone by name, but I have had quite a few discussions with Luke, and I can say from experience you won't find a more compassionate and giving guy. He knows his stuff. He does a lot. Sometimes he gets right to the point... no harm, no foul in my book. He always thanks me for good tips, and never mentions again any bad advice I have given that didn't work out... he has helped me tremendously on my journey in life. I don't know AJ as well, but from all the tips he's given, the humor he has shared, and his life experience, I would bet he is a stand up guy also... and another chap I would enjoy riding with.
