Leaf battery chemistry

Does anyone know what the current battery chemistry is in a Nissan Leaf?

A co-worker has one on order and wanted to talk with me about charging. All I can find in searching is they are calling it Lithium Ion and in the future they might put in a Lithium Manganese.

only guy i know with a leaf complained bitterly about lack of spare tire from horrible experience in bay area freeway traffic. not range anxiety, but that has him bothered too.

Actually ALL Lithium batteries are Lithium Ion. The different chemistries combine Lithium with other materials (cobalt, manganese, spinel, iron and others) to make the cathode of the the battery. Have a look at Wikiedia for some good accurate summaries of these.

The Leaf uses Lithium Manganese batteries (LiMnO2, lithium manganese dioxide), one of the most common Lithium battery chemistries.

My co worker got his leaf and drove it to work for the first time today. His drive is 42 miles and he was down to 8% left when he got to work. He was driving 75 in the car pool lane for about 25 miles, then 60-65 for the rest. I had to pick him up from the Nissan dealer. He had to go there to use their quick charger or he wouldn't have been able to drive home. Not exactly the performance he had hoped for. He's hoping the it was the heater and seat warmers that reduced his range.

Wow, is this Leaf owner clueless. 75 MPH in a E-car, both heaters on. Did he not look into why people don't own these things.

Tell him to stay in the slow lane, put a coat and warm hat on and not use the heaters and he may be able to use it for his commute, if he is lucky.
