Hybrid 7.2v 6.5Ah Nimh Battery Sticks

Postby peterperkins » Thu Oct 06, 2011 1:11 pm

I have a large stock of used good battery sticks from hybrid cars which are more than adequate for e-Bike/scooter projects especially recumbents or trikes where the extra weight is less of an issue.

They are very easy to assemble into packs using the screw terminals (bolts supplied) and include a ptc heat sensing strip to implement a simple overheating protection circuit. They can handle upto 100A discharge and 50A charge rates. They can be put into series for any voltage HV pack.

I have upwards of 100 sticks available at £10.00 each p&p extra or collection free from my address in North Yorkshire.

They are a doddle to charge overnight with a cheap fixed current 300-350ma psu meanwell led supply and no fancy BMS is reqd. The only proviso is that the self discharge rate will be higher than you are used to, so charge them within a few days of your expected use to get best results. For optimum performance just charge them prior to use. You can trickle charge them at very low currents for standby use if you wish.

I'll happily warranty the sticks for 6 months in any e-bike/scooter application and replace them for the cost of postage only.

PM me your requirements.

That's pretty cool. It doesnt quite work with what I've got going on. That said, you might also get some people interested at DIYElectriccar forums. But, perhaps, you're especially targeting ebikes for whatever reason. Might want to mention, do you know how much of the 6.5ah still works? Have you been able to test them?
New to endless-sphere? Notice a lot of signatures recommending Ebike.ca? That's because it's the best place for a quality and manageable, (but still 'real'), first build. Justin is a solid supporter of electric bike development, and a good source of equipment.

My hat off a thousand times to the green people that effectively run this forum. The ES Mods are superb.

After cycling on a decent charger like the Robotronic Overloader a few times to condition them after storage, most average out at about 6ah capacity at 15A ~2C+ discharge rate on the ones I have tested at random.

The Puekert effect does reduce capacity at high discharge rates. At 65A (10C) you would see about 3.5Ah.

I'm going to put some on e-bay and other forums.

10 sold now ~90 sticks left

My load tester is an old farnell thing at least 20 years old+ Uses ~10 x 2N3055 in parallel if i remember correctly with some pwm going on. Capable of 120A at 30V adjustable CC or CV It gives cells a good workout :)

I now have a further 100 of these. Demand was very high last time and i sold them all quite quickly.

I have a large quantity (100+) x 7.2V (6 x D Cell) sticks from ex Honda Hybrid cars in my garage.
These quality panasonic nimh sticks are designed for 50A charge and 100A discharge rates.

The sticks I have are no longer suitable for hybrid car use at those rates, but at more modest discharge upto 25A they are fine. Capacity is anything from 5.5-6.5ah at 20A discharge rate.

They have M6 bolt ends and are a doddle to connect together using bolts, or studs to screw sticks directly together end to end. Charging is easy using a simple led constant current 350ma power supply. The 48V led supplies on e-bay can charge anything from two to six sticks. The 90V ones can do up ten sticks. Five sticks is ideal and gives a simple 36V ~6ah pack that weighs 5kg.

Search for 300ma or 350ma led driver on ebay for a simple charger there are zillions.

Price is £10 a stick for a random stick from my stock. All my sticks are currently stored in my cool workshop.

Postage is extra or you can have as many as you want if you collect from my address in North Yorkshire.

I find the best way to use them is wake them up with a robotronic overloader type nimh charger/cycler then build them into a pack. I've used quite a few in my electric bike and other projects and they are great.

Here is a yt video of a random stick under torture/test on my electronic load.

6.5ah 7.2v Nimh Hybrid Battery Sticks 100A Load Testing. - YouTube

It shows what they look like and even these older sticks still perform so i'm being conservative with my ratings above.
