The Lithium Mining Game

My two days with Nemaska Lithium

By Bill Moore

Open Access Article Originally Published: December 19, 2011

Eons ago, a little understood process formed pale green crystals of what geologists call spodumene. It formed in slivered tendrils among course-grained aggregations of glittering white pegmatite. According to Guy Bourassa, the president of Nemaska Lithium, headquartered in Quebec, such deposits typically formed in narrow, short “dike-like” geologic structures that occasionally become exposed when the overburden of soil erodes away, revealing the marled bone-white rock below. A sharp, trained eye might catch the green glint of spodumene that hints at the presence of a valuable mineral on which the modern world of mobile communications, computing, and now transportation is becoming evermore dependent: lithium.

Nemaska plans to begin developing the project this year, constructing the necessary support facilities, with mining slated to commence in 2013. Bourassa made the point during his presentation that not only does the project sit on the second richest known deposit of lithium-bearing spodumene, estimated at 386,000 tons of lithium oxide, the company itself is highly undervalued. He estimates that if you compare it with comparable lithium juniors like Canada Lithium or majors like Talison, it should be worth between $300-400 per tonne of lithium contained. Today, it’s valued at $73CAD.

Disclaimer: I don’t own any shares of Nemaska Lithium (TSX-V:NMX) … yet.

Canadian graphite producers prepare for boom

PAV JORDAN — MINING REPORTER

Move over rare earths – graphite is the new darling of the mining industry.

Canadian graphite miners are angling to be high-end suppliers to the global lithium ion battery market, where companies such as LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi and Hitachi are fuelling growing demand for new technologies ranging from smartphones and laptops to electric cars.

Last month: Australia backs lithium mine to spur battery push:
http://www.reuters.com/article/australia-lithium-pilbara-minerals-idUSL3N1JO1E3

Starts:
The Australian government will invest in a lithium mine for the first time, as part of a wide-ranging effort to shore up power stability in a market increasingly dependent on variable wind and solar power.

The government said on Tuesday it would invest about A$20 million ($15 million) into Pilbara Minerals Ltd's Pilgangoora project in Western Australia, which will produce lithium concentrate, a key component in electric vehicles and batteries.

Thread seems to have fallen off a cliff, so, lets see if anyone is interested ? Have not seen any real mention of investing in Nickle. Seeing as how 80+ % of EV battery cells are composed of Nickle and E. Musk has opened the door to massive battery manufacturing, I have put a pittance of my income (re:stimulus payment) into 4 Nickle producing companies - a couple of them non-producing at the moment, although large owners of upwards of 30 year supply, Canadian companies.

Due to the Covid scandle and election scandle, the stocks are up and down from the day traders activities. E. Musk is also buying mining rights in Nevada and offering VERY generous contracts for efficient and clean production of Nickle to producers in North America.

Any comments ?

you dont invest in mining companies in Canada unless theyre mining somewhere else like South America. Billions of exploration has been spent with a "promise" of approval but the environmentalists and aboriginals have killed most projects and scared smart money away.
dont invest in the Yukon or BC

Thanks for the input. 1 company is mining Canada and they are extending their area. Another is a neighboring area to a working mine.
These 2 are hopefully able to make things work out. The other 2 are new prospects and I am in for a pittance. With the advancement in EV's, the Nickle has to come from somewhere.
At least, maybe I can recover my meager total on rising activity on the stocks. This was mainly a return to the market and see what is happening.

Are you in the market and might have suggestions ? Always willing to listen.

i was a miner in bc and was going to head to the Yukon to flee regulations in BC but the Yukon went under Liberal control (they regulate you out of business instead of banning it) and into treaty negotiations with the natives which has almost put an end to mining in the Yukon. pretty sure 250,000 km2 of land have been locked up in the treaty process for 3500 natives. if you watch that TV show, Gold Rush, last year Water licences were being delayed and mining seasons were lost. This year youll see people leaving the Yukon.

Billions have been lost by investors because of our environmental impact studies and Archeological assessments/Land disputes from the treaty processes. all it takes is One Corporation with deep pockets that doesnt want a project to go through to pay some aboriginals to protest a project and it becomes a nightmare.

this mine was really hot, my dad bought alot of stock at 7cents back around 2005 and sold at $2.10. about 5 years ago a friend of mine was up there drilling and every hole was hot. just did a google search, now its dead

alot more stories like that if you search.

id be looking at guyana. theyve discovered bigger gold and better quality oil deposits than venezuela

dont invest in Natural resources if the nearest city flies a flag like this

Chile and lithium but read this article. Same thing, protesters and environmental studies

I'll second that. British Columbia is not a place to do business. Only mega corporations and monopolies are welcome. Or if you are a First Nation. The Second Nation, i.e. the 97% rest of us are driven out of business through archaic red tape environmental regulations controlled by socialists, or through First Nation "Consultation" -- i.e. handing out royalties that neutralizes your profit or otherwise get your project vetoed because the FN disagreed with it. Canada is extra friendly to global billion dollar corporations who have deep pockets to navigate the regulatory maze. Entrepreneurs and people creating real productive jobs need not apply. No surprise that the C$ is worth only 75 cents.

It's almost like the people in charge of Canadia don't want to waste every natural resource they've got as quickly as possible for a short term profit. Funny.

The big corps just need to throw money at the politicians and Prime Minister Trudeau will bend over backwards for them.

Due to the Covid scandle and election scandle

Comments like this and others can be taken to another area.

Investing, well I would be careful and see what happens when Biden is in with Janet Yellen and the others. Two years ago they dropped the interest rates to speed up the US economy trying to get to 4% GDP. The markets could contract abruptly next year, companies are overleveraged at the moment.

Not saying it is not a good area to sink your profits into. They started mining Lithium on the East Coast of the US. That might be something to look into. Might research underwater mining companies. That is getting hot but not sure it's a good investment yet.

Yeah, where each natural resource project costs $1 billion, takes 10 years to permit and another four years to construct, produces 5,000 real jobs and endless royalty for the aboriginals and provincial government, and very little returns for the investors, that's how quick profits are made. Keeping natural resources in the ground just impoverishes all of us.

All good input in this last part of the thread. Agree with the possible new USA administration comments. I feel the Lithium market will fade out. There are many new materials being investigated. Nickle is the biggest component, so, that is what I was looking into.

As far as looking into other countries, I live in one of them, and the underhanded dealing is rampant and a great risk to invest in. Just remember how the American oil companies developed Venezuela and then got thrown out.

It's tough to find an affordable investment, especially with the coming of a 1 world order and the extinctment of most currencies. I just want to have a small income to go along with my current one and just be left alone in an obscure area.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

Don't give up to easily, the money is always were people are not looking. Then later they say I should have done that. We will have more batteries. Maybe I should poke around looking for opportunities. I could use more money.

ZeroEm, I would be interested in what you find, IF you do "poke around". I'm not very computer literate and am up to my eyeballs with projects.
Thank you for any new information.

Real estate takes a chunk of money to invest in. I don't have that much, unless I sell what I have. If I do that, where would I live ? Son wants to buy in Alabama and live a simple lifestyle, self sufficient as possible. I'm too old to start over !
