Just a wild hunch, but I bet his date doesn't want to even spend a second peeping at some tiny screen on a cell-log meter while riding. I know when I'm racing, I generally can afford a single 1 second glance at the CA screen per lap (mid straight-away) and I try to see "Ah used" For commuting I look as often as I want of course, but I don't know of any dates that are going to be competent in checking a cell-log meter while enjoying a ride through a frisbee golf park.
What folks should be using is Method's clever little HVC/LVC board. If a cell goes under 2.7v, your controller is turning off. If you're charging and a cell goes above 4.3v, your charger turns off. In normal use, it should never be needed 99% of the time, but you're sure going to be glad you had it for that 1% time when it saves your pack.
In this case though, I think he is very happy it worked out this way, I know I am. I love the flaming basket pictures. Priceless stuff.
