Plumbing cloth might be good padding material for Lipo. I saw it at Home Depot, sold primarily to protect surfaces from torch flame when sweating pipe in tight spaces.

First wiki article that should be written is "lithium batteries and fire"

So many exaggerations and dumb things get said.

liveforphysics wrote:Not all LiPo is sensitive to physical abuse. BMSBattery just happens to make some of the most dangerous LiPo cells I've ever tested. They are as dangerous as original Generation 1 RC LiPo from early 2000.

Here is a modern 20Ah LiPo cell charged to 4.15v, but that got the outer bulk of the tab ripped off from some rough handling, so we decided to do strike it until it would ignite. We were all disappointed. Even an A123 cell smokes and sometimes flames up if you pound it like this. NMC LiPo just lays there and does nothing no matter what you to do it. It also handles >10v overcharge and just sits there taking it.

But sadly, you guy's cant get your hands on these unless you're buying in the 10's of millions of dollars per order, and have an approved pack design by the company that passes all the exhausting safety requirements.

LOL, tis a shame that batterys this safe have such stringent safety requirements... and seriosly, charging them to 10V?!?!? its like super lipo!!

haha
and the vid reminded me of cavemen trying to make fire by bashing a rock with a stick. And it was just as successful... :P

a couple of cell log units from hobby king might have saved you alot of money
you can see graph of each cells voltage, if anything weird going on you know about
it immediately,

Just a wild hunch, but I bet his date doesn't want to even spend a second peeping at some tiny screen on a cell-log meter while riding. I know when I'm racing, I generally can afford a single 1 second glance at the CA screen per lap (mid straight-away) and I try to see "Ah used" For commuting I look as often as I want of course, but I don't know of any dates that are going to be competent in checking a cell-log meter while enjoying a ride through a frisbee golf park.

What folks should be using is Method's clever little HVC/LVC board. If a cell goes under 2.7v, your controller is turning off. If you're charging and a cell goes above 4.3v, your charger turns off. In normal use, it should never be needed 99% of the time, but you're sure going to be glad you had it for that 1% time when it saves your pack. :-)

In this case though, I think he is very happy it worked out this way, I know I am. I love the flaming basket pictures. Priceless stuff. :P
For ebike parts, don't be a douche, buy from http://www.ebikes.ca or http://www.MethTek.com

Ironically the same girl started a house fire recently while trying to spray paint a furnace in her house...she forgot about the pilot light...poof.

And i have no regrets about the fire..it was a spectacular day and led to a fun thread. :)

And as for the wife we are now permanently separated and the bike has yet to be rebuilt.

That summer day seems forever ago.

SO i should put a happy ending on this story.

The good news is the little lady learned about lipo safety, and has learned to treat lipo with diligence and respect.

Also has learned a few tricks in the kitchen.

It turns out that LIpo's are indeed fun.

But everyone should remember that lipos can be dangerous too.
