Baja Rat. Build

Postby Brentis » Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:35 pm

A topic on depression has me posting a ton today. Unusual for me.
So while I'm inspired, I thought I should start a new build thread.

Allow me to introduce the Baja Rat.

Any idea who makes this motor?
10" x 3" tire.
I use my 52v Cell_man pack Runs an indicated 60+ kmh, once the limiter is disconnected.
I believe 50+ kmh is a more accurate speed though.

I intended to use this commute & take my lady to the beach/ice cream and such.
She has yet to ride with me
Because I am currently funds limited, and a need to create.
I am planing on fitting

Very cool build! Since it has a hub motor and no pedals, what does the chain do? Does the jackshaft give you the option of going moped?

This scooter is considered an Ebike in Ontario, because it has operable  pedals & a max. of 500w.

This thing is all but un-pedalable. Way to wide pedal stance + weighing 200lbs ish.
The crank arms are 3", but still manage to scrape the ground, driven aggressively.
Fuhgetaboutit.
To be legal, I keep the pedals/tool kit in here

Here is the current stable.

My plan to put the scooter hub on the Strong  (bike on the left of pic), may have changed.
I seemed to recall the dropout spacing as 210mm but in fact is only 175mm.
This would allow me the option of putting the HS3540 on instead. Keeping the scoot as is.
As cheap as the components on the scoot are. I quite enjoy riding it.
Soft suspension, pretty strong front disc. 50+ kmh. Lights/signals.

Options

It's a neat scooter and could be the basis for a pretty impressive e-commuter. A little more bracing and the battery capacity could drastically increase while making the scoot more Ruckus-like. It could turn into a long distance machine without spending massive amounts of time or money. I look forward to watching your progress.

After seeing yours I did a quick search and found a clean one for $600US, but it's about six hours away.

A couple of things you may want to consider when looking for a scoot like this.
Most cheap electric scooters have junk components/build quality.
Almost all have Sla, of poor quality.
Perfect for an upgrade to your favorite chemistry of lithium.
So look for a year old example with toast/unattended batteries, and Haggle.
The Baja 500e had 48v18ah60lbs of lead, and could go maybe 25km @ 50kmh. 30kmh if your lucky up a moderate hill.
The Baja Rat has 52v 11.5ah 14lbs of a123, goes 30km @ 50+kmh. and will slow less than 10kmh, up all hills that I have.
Big difference.

Lead is dead.

I am not sure what the supply of these E-Bike/Scooter are like in your area.
Here in Southern Ontario, they are everywhere.
Craigslist, Kiijjii, ebay. trade mags. etc..

I was lucky enough to get mine from the company I used to work for.
A retail store(with a misleading name) that caters to farm, industry, Gonzo creator's in general
Sells alot of "Harbour Freight" type stuff. Hand tools, hydraulic hose/fittings.
(Canadian's from coast to coast will probably figure out the store)
$150.00  as a customer return that had toast batteries.

And the conversion began....

You have a few things that are absent around here: EV's and hills.

And the only Canadian I know wonders why I would ride anything that does not require two-stroke oil. Thanks for the info!

As originally intended, I have begun to build a frankenBike.

Once the scooter had the lead replaced with a123, it became fun & quite useful.
I just dont have the space or funds for three builds.
So I combined the best of two of them.
Kinda looks like a JohninCr build

Thanks to those that commented/followed this build. :)

Cheers Scoot.

A guy burnin' 2 stroke on Vancouver Island
Shocked a pack of dirty hippies hasn't attacked him.
I thought the only thing burned out there was weed.
