EDF powered jet bike...

So I was looking at my stripped down GT avalanche, and then, in the background a dual 64mm EDF setup caught my eye. It's from an R/C A-10.

Anyway I got to wondering; would this work? Even scarier, would it work well?

I know these EDF units start making more power with less wattage the faster air is rushing through them. With a simple 3 cell LiPo, these jets have plenty of thrust, more than enough to move a bike and rider (I think...)

So what do you all think about this idea?? Other than the downside that the bike would be pretty loud, it would sound pretty cool! I may give it a try just for S & G's

Those are going to have probably 1.5 lbs of thrust each. But they would sure SOUND like you are going 100 mph.

Also, the usual caveat, the propulsive efficiency would outright stink.

The fun would start when you get up to the 90+ mm electric ducted fans, i think they are good for 10+ lbs of thrust. Of course they deplete a 12s 5000 mah lipo in about 4 minutes. The electric ducted fan subforum on rcgroups is a good place to look for info.

I think a lot has to do with the 'duct' design itself. I've seen a couple bike builds using just the motor and fan part, but this defeats the purpose. The duct part starts wide, has a fan in front and then slowly gets smaller / narrower towards the exit. This is what creates the velocity necessary for decent thrust, and really starts working well and much more efficient at higher speeds. This one I am using is about 5" long if you look at the side view.

You probably will not get to the speed where they make any sense, because of low thrust at the low speed. Have seen few builds here on ES with Youtube video, after every stop is a torture to get speed up again and forget about hills. It does not back up the main idea of EV/EB but sure you will have a lot of fun and attention.

I bought a five inch unit just for some fun a few months back. Waiting on a gear motor and drive unit to see how things will fit together. I want it to make enough noise to cover gear motor noise when I pass people up. Looking forward to the fun. I doubt there will be enough power to do much with the weight of a bike and rider even with multiple EDFs this size but they do look and sound cool.

Holy Crap! That bike setup with 2 large 2 bladed props works pretty good.. besides the fact it looks equally as dangerous

Yea with those blades right behind your back you have NO room for error.. That looks about as stupid as anything I have ever seen.
Yea I am impressed , but geesh.. At least if you are in the air you have a lot less likely chance of running into anyone other then the
ground.
