Great project !
I'm dreaming of building myself an electric chopper.

I like your idea of filling up the void left by the engine, looks great.

If i had time and money and knowledge i would buy this baby from Big Bear Chopper
http://www.bigbearchoppers.com/bikes/sled/prostreet.htm
and convert it to electric.
They sell the parts separately in kit if i understand well.

Keep us posted.

Postby allen_okc » Wed Dec 28, 2011 3:08 pm

thats a pretty clean chopper, the next bike i build will be more of a true custom chopper like that...

long custom forks wide rear tire for that more of a traditional chopper look...

this project was more about how to get that engine look out of a battery box so a clean chopper like the one your showing me can look more natural and still be a EV...

anyway i hope you can get one going for your project, i would definitely like to see more EV's with that kind of a customization applied to it...

and Thank You for the kind words...

I like that cover where the tank went, looks real good. Any interest in reproducing it? :D

Hello Jay - im curious is the tank for the Hurricane?

im asking because i dont have a way to do spherical shaped corners - my tank is more squared edge...

but if you want one like mine then yes i can reproduce it for you... i need lots of measurement... not in a mass reproduction mode but i could build one for you...

Im still waiting for Ed to ask for one in hopes of him building an awesome chopper, which i know his would be totally radical...

No, it wouldn't be for the hurricane. I have a old school GPZ and an old school GS (but I don't have the swing arm for the GS). I like the exact look of the one you did. I wouldn't want to round it at all.

I don't know if it was shown in the pics in the 1st post, they aren't showing up for me, but do you have any inside pics/details of that battery enclosure? That is really sweet too.

here is the beginning to end of the battery box photos...

everything on this battery box is custom built by me from aluminum scraps from the sign shop...

it is insulated with rubber spray paint and three sheets of 1/16 inch lexan - bottom and both sides to prevent the ends of the headway battery cells "Headway 38120P 8ah cell (LiFePO4)" from shortening against the aluminum wall.

the battery wiring is channeled through a braided water line with air fittings at each end for the hose to clamp to.

the box is bolted down by the front and back ends only - the side covers are extruded out to allow room for fuses and charging connectors, bms and a on board charger which will added later, the outlets inside of the removable side covers allow each cell to be charged individually and tested, two external plugins for a 72 volt and a 12 volt lifepo4 charger.

the whole box without the batteries is about 25 pounds all together - it looks heavier than it is...

it will also hold hold 88 headway cells...

the whole purpose of the custom battery box is to keep the general public from tampering with the batteries, to protect the battery from the weather elements and to give a motored look for a chopper motorcycle...

the batteries have been the next step to the wiring - the 12 volt system will be powered by four Headway 38120P 8ah cells...

the photo shows the beginning of the charging - when done the cells will be 14.4 volts... using EV ED's system they get a perfect charge every time...

A Special Thanks To my friends at Manzanita Micro Power Systems and to ED, Travis and Ted...

Beautiful work.
