New toy - Sachs MadAss 125cc

Hi guys,

I know this is near-sacrilege on Endless Sphere, but I got a great deal on an I.C.E. scooter called a Sachs MadAss 125, and I'm not planning to e-convert it...



I have been sorta secretly hoping someone else would convert one - maybe someone has and I missed it?

Anyway, just wanted to share, cuz I was excited to get it and thought maybe some of you hadn't ever heard of these before.

If you haven't heard of these, they are 4-stroke with a 4-speed transmission, not auto like most scooters. Rated at 8hp, not much. About $2200 brand new at a dealer. Even at $2200 they are cheap, but you can find knock-offs for as little as $1200.

Not your typical scooter look. Personally this is much better than a typical scooter which makes you look like "an old lady sitting on a toilet" as I once read somewhere.

Hah. Maybe I went about it the wrong way then cuz my bike cost me about $3400: Complete running bike, Recumpence components, batteries, charger + PSU, ancillaries. I'm into $4,000 total investment if I count my screwups and tools...

And my bike isn't even done.

The "MadAss" has a lot of good points for a powerful Emoped..
Strong frame
full suspension
Strong Brakes
tough wheels & big tires

...But, it does have a few drawbacks also..
,,heavy frame
no bodywork to hide the battery and electrical components

If it were me, i would swap out the motor for one of those 20hp "pit bike" versions ..and just ride it for fun !

I wish the US got those cool moped ish motocross bikes like the Greyborg guy just electrified! Those are much cooler looking in my opinion, but this one is nice as far as US stuff goes!

Ah that takes me back to my moped days, the madass has the same
motor as my old Honda C50 Super Cub

I dont think any of the quality brands import them... only the larger cc's

maybe chinese ones, search "chinese supermoto 125cc"

There's been one of those for sale in my town for awhile and it looks pretty cool and I have been interested, but all my transportation dollars go to e-bikes these days.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I am a big fan of KTM's 125cc duke, and but it's not available in the US, and would probably be around $6-7K if it was.

The freeride is cool, and I would really like to buy a Husqvarna e-Go. But again, none of that stuff is available. My MadAss cost me only $1800, so I figured it'd was probably amongst the best bang-for-buck options on the US market.

I guess you know there is a ton of tune up kits for those "Honda cub" style , horizontal 4 strokes as used in the Madass.
The Mini Moto /pit Bike racers all use them and they can get some impressive outputs..( 25+bhp !?)

Yeah, aside from head kits that bump your capacity up to as much as 180cc or so, you can swap in a few different motors, a cub motor being one option. Should be fun to tinker with, but I aam going to wait until I'm bored with the stock configuration before I consider or attempt any mods like that.

These 125-250 motorbikes and scooters are great fun. Modern scooters are fantastic machines too, although I don't mind shifting. I do have to remember what I am on or I will squeeze the rear brake on my scooter thinking it is a clutch. Worse yet is to grab for the left brake handle on the Zero before realizing there isn't one.

The Madass reminds me of the Honda Ruckus a little.

It is amazing the range of power available..pedal only, hybrid e-bikes, electric and gas-powered motorcycles and scooters. I love them all. A 50 cc scooter is great fun too. You can ride them wide open throttle nearly all the time and they seem to love it. Very practical transportation too.

I'm doing an electric conversion on a madass 125.
Cut out the bottom of the fuel tank member and installing headways.
Sevcon gen4 where the muffler was mounted. Cromotor.
Should be a hoot.

There is, or at least was a 50cc Madass. I've got one of the engines laying around useless after I was burned by an eBay seller who called it "Complete" with a photo but decided to keep the CDI and even waited on shipping to push the comment time to expire. Just plain takes the fun out of things.

I almost bought a 50cc one, and wanted to convert it to the 100 or so cc. but they only did an 80cc kit.

I saw the 125 the other day, and thought it a bit of a big bike ..bit heavy for a 125, but the 50cc frame with the 125 motor or electrify the 50cc version ..that would be a good bike

The 50 is amazingly slow even with the transmission. My friend offered to sell me one for 500 bucks. I just can't do much with a 30mph loud little bike. My ebike is alot more valuable. I've seen guys with GY160 motor conversions. They're actually really compelling. 80+mpg and 60+ mph. Still a tinker toy, but a cool little bike if you ask me.

I ended up selling the thing about a month ago.

The bike was fun, but I tired quickly of the low power, and sorta feeling oversized for the thing. The KTM 390 Duke that's coming later in the year caught my eye, so I thought I'd dump this MadAss and save up for one of those.

I'm not a speed demon, and I was certainly following traffic laws, but eventually, you don't want to have to hold it at WOT just to keep up with traffic, looking like the little engine that could all the while.

Maybe if I already had a primary bike, and this was just to tinker with and tool around on, that'd be different, but as a serious motorcycle, it just didn't make the cut for me. Great first bike, but now I want an upgrade.

Hah. That is pretty awesome. But no, don't ride it anymore. Sold it to a guy who, literally, immediately put a 201cc pit bike engine in it.
