Whats the max gauge I can use for phase wires? Will 13awg fit inside the axl? if im not mistaken the original ones are 16awg.

I have 12awg silicone wires at hand and im mostly sure they do not fit in the axl. Did anyone fitted 12awg wires inside MAC axl?

You need a thin insulation to get the max copper in the axle. The standard wire for the Mac 500W is now 2mm^2, about 14AWG, older models may have been only 1.5mm^2. the size is generally written on the cable sheath. 3pcs of 2.5mm^2 or maybe 3mm^2 should fit, but you can squeeze in more by using 6 wires, 2 in parallel for each phase.

You could always just use the existing cabling, but doubled up, but you do need to be careful the cable is not cut by the axle. The original cables are pretty good IME, they may get hot, but I've never had the phase wire insulation melt.

hey CM/others, I have a few questions about the macs... I'm using a HT on 24s lipo atm, but the weight is kind of a killer on off road trails, so a MAC looks like a good option untill I get a mid drive setup...

thus im interested in the torque rear motors, probably a 200rpm version. The HT hits about 65km/h on 24s, but since I almost never bother going above 50 or so, the lower kv mac seems like a good option (would it get me to 55k on 24s?)

Im running 24s on the HT at the moment, will the mac be ok with this? im not sure if there is a limit with the gears etc to a cirtain rpm? (ill be limiting the amps to ~30, and normal use will be <20.)

I've pm'ed and emailed you CM with similar stuff and requesting a shipping quote, as I haven't heard back from previous attempts of email only.

cheers all.

24 series is way, way too much. That's 100 volts give or take, right?

Neptronix, whose thread you should find, pushed his 8 turn MAC to 75 kph on just 76 volts and he admits that is too much.

48 volt (52.8 volt nominal) is enough to get me around 52/53 kph with pedalling on 100 per cent speed. Granted the torque 10 turn version will be slower, perhaps 20 per cent, so 60 volts will give you about 50 kph.

I don't know what a HT is but I assume it is a direct drive hub? If it is, there is simply no comparison between the speed and acceleration of a MAC and a direct drive at similar voltages. The MAC is much faster and much quicker.

cell_man was away for a couple of weeks so he probably has a mountain of messages to get through.

about 93V nominal. the HT is a DD cristalyte hub, slightly higher kv than the 200 (about 230 or so). from my best calcs, the 200 should get me to about 55... (200/36v, x92v, *2meter (wheel dia), *60minutes *.8 for loaded speed), though maybe im missing something.

already spoken to neptro, who said he killed his on 4kw (broke the old style gears)... ill be keeping this to about 30a max, from what I can tell this should give me slightly more torque across the entire rpm range than my HT, in a smaller lighter motor. Im not going to run these power levels often either....

I have a question regarding the MAC 500w rear hubs (8). With the new composite gears, how noisy is this hub? How does the noise level compare to a 9c DD?.
Thanks

I can't compare to a 9C but mine is not at all noisy when running. Tyre noise from my chunky tyres just about drowns the whine out.

WISH THEY WERE!

Prices are up a lot due to the NEO mag shortage! Shortage is like the gas shortage here in the states. Yes there is a shortage but not at the pumps, just our pockets!

These are very quiet motors, dont let anyone fool you. They are no noisier than a DD bub if running speed for speed. All motors get louder with more power, and these whine ever so slightly, but not ANY louder than any powerful DD hub I have seen... Just a different type of sound, think gears, not power pulses making the sound..
Power is a fascinating thing, the more you have, the more you want, but the real power is having the restraint not to use it all at once...............Um...Yeah..

The harder you work.....The luckier you get!!

I have a question, Can 12T handle overweight load 440lbs I.E. My Yuba Cargo bike with 2 girls + myself commute to the school.

Can the green or gray gearbox handle that weight load, I am going run 16s4p LiPo battery (20mph max) and stock Lyen controller with 35A. Lastly question, Does the metal gearbox would be very loud in slow speed in 12T high torque MAC and I am not worried about annoyed sounds cause I am deaf guy but concerned about my 2 girls whom are hearing children.

I used my 10T the other day on 12s to carry myself and a passenger (neither of us THAT heavy) and it didn't even complain going up a slight grade. Pulling 1500W max it pulled away no pedalling no problem and it wasnt that loud, standard plastic gears. I was really impressed I didn't expect it to reach 20mph. It was terrifying being on a beach cruiser with two people at those speeds. The 12T at 12S will be fine for a cargo bike I'd imagine.

@nonlineartom - Thank for share your experience, I wouldn't dare run 20mph while loaded (me + 2 girls). When I drop 2 girls off at their school then I drive back home full max speed 20mph is good enough for me. I just wanted strong gearbox green or grey one maybe metal gearbox sole purpose last long reliable worry-free maintenance. I have some hilly less 5-6% grade or so.

Does anyone know of a good source for replacement spokes for these kits? I managed to break one and I'm having a hard time finding thicker than normal ones locally. I think it is 13Ga and 221.8mm long. Not sure on the thickness though as i only had my multi-size spoke tool for measurement.
Any source with fast delivery in eu/uk would be great, and some hints on what to get as i don't know the proper terminology.

Yes thats right Puma was a name given to the motors Mac and BMC by Mark Higgon from team hybrid when he bought them in to the UK about 5 years ago when I did all the films for them on the BMX. Although in the main the Puma was a BMC motor.

I've got a "puma" branded motor, with a screw on disc mount, the casing is actually totally different to the later mac motors I've got. Internally they are nearly identical though. Knoxie have you got a link to your puma BMX? that's exactly what I'm working on now.
