Ebike motor/controller hall/phase/throttle tester $29

-Mine was the same- it worked straight out of the box. But it's a chinese made battery with no expiry date, usually no capacity rating is shown on the battery or the makers site, so first stop is the bin- the only batteries that I've had leakage problems with for many years now are this kind.

This tester is probably in a toolbox most of the time so there's a chance of leakage damage (Like everyone I know I don't remove batteries from equipment not used for long periods despite manufacturers small print warnings in instruction manuals) so the cheap battery goes and a better brand name one used.

Once you read the directions on how to use the tester (and believe me please read the directions), this tester is invaluable. I don't know how I would have tested my hall sensors and throttle without it.

When you turn the wheel and are testing a gear motor, the normal 5:1 planetary gearing works in reverse so you get a 1:5 speedup and the LEDs go like crazy. It seems to primarily be a DD test, but as long as all LEDs light for your gear motor you are okay (even if you can't see them stepping nicely).

I'm thinking maybe you have a MAC or BMC...

When you test the motor halls with a geared motor, what happens if you move the wheel very slowly, as in a few mm's at a time? Does that then show you the hall sequence better?

Also, when you do the motor winding / phase wire test on a geared motor, what is the expected behaviour of the top row of motor lights?
Edit: I just re read jateureka's instructions, which mentioned that all three top row lights may glow at once with the geared motors.. Thanks..

What does yours do when the phase wires are hooled up and tested Auraslip?

got it a year ago, but just really got to it today. replaced the connectors to be compatible with my setup. great device!!!!

i did all tests: halls, phase wires, throttle all working fine

but when i engage the throttle, there are no lights on the right handside [6leds in circle]

Just ordered a PC interface cable to check what V is my controller set up for [gave mine to a friend with another controller]

BUT if the voltage of the battery was lower than setup in controller, would this test fail?

If the voltage of the battery is lower than the cutoff or LVC of the controller, the controller outputs would go dead. That's my understanding anyway.

I do third party payment, but only with a prepaid Visa over the phone, no connection to my bank account or "secure" account numbers for internet cyber crime to steal down the road. Also the sucker options avialable from paypal that results in an "illegal" action, a license to steal your money.

Small biz may not afford costs or un-timely payment of Visa compared to Paypal.

i was playing around with this cool little unit. its a bit hard to see the sequence of the blinking leds because they flash too fast. if you spin the wheel slower, they are not bright enough. i might try to film it and then run it in slow motion. what do you guys do?

Figuring out the correct wiring combo is too easy to waste time trying to do it with the tester, searching for a list of known controller combinations for that motor, or even typing a post asking about it. It's a quite simple logic/math problem for which I have posted the easy way to find the solution very many times on the forum. Learn the method and the logic behind it and you will lose all phase/hall combo anxiety forever. Once I learned that every hall combo has one vaild phase combo, and every phase combo has one valid hall combo, and of those 6 valids 3 are forward and 3 are reverse it all became clear. Combine that with the fact that for a sensorless motor, you simply swap any 2 phase wires to change direction, and it becomes downright simple. The only issue with geared hubbies is that you have to listen to hear a valid reverse, since you can't see it spin due to the freewheel.

Depends what you are trying to do with it, you do not need to be able to see the sequence, you just need to be able to see they are all working, remember as John says, it is a tester, not a setup tool.
