I've thought about it myself; then again isn't that motor like 20-30lbs?

It is already bone crushingly heavy to haul my magic pie bike, incl. 12 Lipo packs up windy narrow stairs. If i didn't have this second story problem, i'd be part of the cromotor/Crystalyte 54xx crew.

The all-arounder: 8T MAC motor on a Trek 4500.
The girlfriend bike: 350W front MAC on a 700c Trek.
The wheelie machine: 20" Rear Magic Pie II on a Trek 4300 MTB
The Bus: ??? on a 'da bomb' cargo bike frame

Pro-tips for noobs: Avoid BMS Battery like the plague | Charge RC Lipos to 4.15v, stop discharging at 3.5-3.6v | Use torque plates/arms! | Rear mounted hubs are always best

Yeah, I know what you mean. When I thought I'd try and design a "lightweight" eBike (astro type), it's all out the window of relative comparison when you put the batteries on and try and pick it up!

I think the key is to strap on gear designed for heavy vehicles (scooters, motorbike conversions) and install it on a grade down of vehicle, like a bike, increasing your power:weight.

Tempted Really wouldn't be the word for it, wishing would be more accurate. I have the 5kw version of the motor that he is using, it's just that a controller to unleash it's true potential is a bit out of reach. Even if I had the $1200 for a big sevcon, I sure do not have the resources available to me to get a specialist to program and dyno tune it.

Currently I'm looking for a more off the shelf solution for a controller. And since the motor wouldn't be pulling as much juice I could probably get away with using the 25c lipo instead of nanotech.

One other thing is that luke's motor is a different wind than what I have and what is available from golden motor. The winding I have is geared for about a 55mph top speed using a 5:1 reduction from the motor to the wheel on a 26" with 48v

Oh very cool Gestalt. If it's anything like half the fun then it should be a handful:)
I wondered what the golden motor controller with their motor would be like. Do you have any videos? Does the bike feel heavy once it gets going? Distance etc?

Some pics since going 30s with her, and adding the stylish 2x4 wood block and ratchet strap to the battery tray. :-)
That is special hacked firmware loaded into the biggest of the Sevcon controllers, with every last current gain it has cranked to maximum output. They power full-size 5-passenger electric cars from this same controller, and with out every setting maxed out.

I love how the guys I let ride it are extremely bad ass riders, some professional motorcross racers, some factory test riders and stunt riders, and a superbike racing AMA champion, and the general reaction is to come back shaking and muttering nonsense about being too fast, and how they have never felt acceleration like it in there lives, and how its obviously going to lead to the untimely death of anyone riding it.

And these are the folks who all ride >150hp superbikes on a daily basis, wringing every last pony from them, and not getting a thrill.

Luke, this is great. The cutting edge you are most definitely leading!

Seeing as this build just 'appeared', what you you recommend to anyone looking to give it a go? Has anyone on the forum asked you detailed questions about it?

If someone wanted 60% of the power, could they use your setup and the goldenmotor controller?

For me, this is the most exciting thing on Endless Sphere at the moment. It's almost like an unlimited power bike, where you don't have to ride it like a lunatic, but when you want to get going, it can really fly.

I guess it doesn't rain much (exposed cables) and there aren't many potholes on your commute:)

Which begs the question....what's next?

It is 96 of this mosfet:

I made a thread somewhere here with pics of the guts in the half-size 42fet version.

96 FETs  Sure the layout is much better but for a $1K+ controller one would have hoped they could splurge for some more proper FETs....

Again if it gets the job done but from an engineering point of view it is disturbing...

OK. :-)

Made this cheesy little video just today for you. Shows a flat happening on the dyno roller with 83mph roller speed, kinda neat to see.

Dyno result teaser, note! This was not WOT, because I could not get the tire to stop slipping on the roller, so I had to lay into the pull very softly, and it's drag is setup for a full weight motorcycle with full motorcycle aero drag. :-) It's a teaser because I only let you see to 42mph :-) It pulls past 100mph. :-)

Ok ok... I don't know how to read dyno charts but is that 4000 FT-LBS of starting torque and 35hp near the end?
Wow.
Nice one for finally getting it on the dyno.

Luke,

It appears you are now running a moto tire in front. Why the bike tire in back? Clearance problems?
