Decent commercial ebikes in Australia?

Postby Spicerack » Tue Feb 21, 2012 3:00 am

Apart from the Stealth range, does anyone have any experience with decent ebikes for sale in Australia? I'm thinking of putting up a business case submission to my work to get some. They'd need decent range, simple to use/charge etc and be fairly durable.

Ideas?

Australia Post is using ebikes around where I live at the moment. The motors look like a Crystalite 408 or even a little bigger.I've done a search but only found http://www.evehicle.com.au/Products/Electric-Bicycles/EVO-Kit-Bike-Combos/ who claim to supply AP.
Their motors in the pictures are the typical "wouldn't pull skin off a rice pudding" type mandated by regulations that are only 200 watts. The one used by my local postie is definitely not one of those.

I'll go past the dispatch centre on my commute tomorrow and get back to you.
Bike: Giant ATX 990
Motor: Crystalyte 408 Rear
Controller: Crystalyte V2 40A
Battery: Ping 48V 15 AH LiFePO4. Charged by the Sun

Daily Commute: 27 km to the salt mine, return 27 km to bliss

Gday Ed and co!

User T3sla has some info on AusPost bikes in this thread page:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8482&start=1290

They seem to be just doing auspost work now, but perhaps if the volume was sufficient...

Perhaps GlowWormCycles are worth a go?

Kiqnkf seems to suggest "Chituma Elec.bikes!!! Read my review in the review section if you like. Phone Laurie, 9786 3982." in the Melbourne group ride thread...

Actually, edited - this is a big list:

What do you mean by "decent" ? ? high quality ? or high powered ?
If you are looking for a "commercial supply" then is only ever going to be a 250 W model. There is a fair choice in that range.
Or are you looking for someone to build you a "Special" high powered bike for off road use...?

PS.. can someone translate WTF MM is on about ??

No luck at the dispatch centre, they were all out.
I just found this vid from Hyena? about the postie ebikes on YouTube:

They don't look too exciting

http://www.gazellebicycles.com.au/ but as stated before, they probably "wouldn't pull skin off a rice pudding".

I spoke to one dealer yesterday, who said that they reprogram the controller to 200w, to fit within Australian law. They are also pedelec.

Yeah the Aus post ones aren't much chop and they're fairly specifically made to be heavy duty for attaching racks to lug around mail on.
Nearly all commercial ebikes I've seen use pathetic little bafang type motors which as stated are hugely gutless.
My pick would be the whisper ones glowworm sells, they're a larger geared motor more like a mac/bmc and while they're still supposedly 200w they'd most likely handle 500w until the cows come home.
The problem with many commercial ebikes, aside from using baby motors is the batteries. They're largely cheap shit 2C lifepo4 that max out at 20 amps (+/- a BMS that also trips at 20-25A) So even if you up the current in the controller the batteries just can't deliver the juice.

If it's for your work though then they're probably going to want to stick with 200w for safety/legal reasons so nearly all of the commercial offerings will be much of a muchness.

How big is the contract though ? The good folks at Hyena Electric Bikes would be happy to oblige if your company will allow themselves to be gouged like Aus post is

Thanks again for the replies, apart from MM of course you spamming MF SPAMBOT!

The bikes would probably need to appear to be legal- I'm sure those stickers would help, hey Jay? At this stage it would only be a small number to start with. That's even if I could get it off the ground. So far I've encountered the usual dismissal and lack of vision that I'm sure many of us have come across before.

I'm still going to put the case up and might approach a govt dept or two to see if they have any ev incentives etc.

Check this URL for Ride On's / Chioice magazine's review of 18 ebikes sold in Oz:

http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-te ... eview.aspx

Gazelle has brought out a new XT Plus model with more torque. See:

http://www.cycle-heaven.co.uk/bikes/bra ... en-s-2012/

They'll be here by ship in late April. Price A$3000.

I'm not a dealer. I've got one on order. Only two months to go!!!
