e-scooter upgrade

Postby Neovin » Sat Feb 25, 2012 9:00 am

Hi all just thought i would post my upgrades to a Chinese stand up scooter, there's still more coming.

It has a rc outrunner i think 45-64, platinum 120-hv-opto Esc and a 24v 10Ah sla that was originally on the scooter.
I get about 3 miles out of this setup and am calculating that i only get 3-4 Ah out of the battery as it was DEAD as the dodo when i got it, The charger i use is my own design an un-filtered switch mode psu with a 40 watt indicator to limit current and to give me an good indication of charge.
I have also built my own computer to control the Esc and receive data from the sensors and adjust the throttle response to negate any overheating, overcurrent, stall starts and to make it easy to ride for anyone new to rc gear( see my other post viewtopic.php?f=28&t=37157 )

so here's what I started with

of course I could not be seen on that so here goes nothing

250 watt too small, how about 2500 watt

How about a change of deck

Bigger wheels, Forks, disk brake and speed sensor

I'm not gunna post the old controller I'll show you what i have so far

here's a vid don't know how to post from G+
https://plus.google.com/photos/10530626 ... yf2xmsiVFA

so what do you think, it goes 22 Mph with the battery voltage after charge @27v, sagging to 22v, which was the way i tried to calculate the gearing ( for 1v = 1mph, that includes efficiency losses ) plus, It has silly acceleration for how High I am up and over the back wheel.
I'm looking for a cost effective upgrade to the battery with max amp out as possible, at around 48v so with efficiency losses at top end from aerodynamics(lack of) i'm looking about 35- 40 Mph and light and small enough so I can still fold it down and chuck in the boot, but i do still have a fair bit of space in the battery compartment, its adjustable until it starts scraping on the floor, so i could fit the same battery again in there but i cant seem to find anywhere that sells them here in the uk.
If anyone reading this is from or near northants, england and has some spare unused/dying sla, that i can work my magic on (rectified AC lol) gimme a shout.

Peace much love,
Cheers, Neo

with all the work you've done on this thing...
I find it strange you are still using SLA.

It may be time for you to read through the countless posts on this forum about LiPo.

As someone that wants a scooter to go 35-40mph,
I imagine LiPo use would totally be an option for you.

Yes I totally agree with you but i'm unemployed at the moment, so i either have to make the best of what I have or be skint for a long time.

I like Sla's, their predictable and can take some abuse also their easy to charge. I built my own charger that does a very good job, it has visibly de-sulphated the top of the battery plates, when I got the battery it was at 11.1v and would not take a charge of a standard 24v charger.

It also forces me to try and be efficient as possible with the throttle curves because draining the battery with too many amps significantly lowers the total Ah out.

The thing is I want to do everything overkill so I want large capacity and large current handling 150+ amps so nanotech's would be my only choice although (see link) I think could be another good option what have you heard of them, are they reliable?
