Seen a few users use them, and seems like they go faster with less voltage than the standard DD ebike hub. I dont have the money to do a full on hubzilla build but was curious about these. Even have seen one with a sprocket side.

Scooter hubs are generally bigger and won't fit on a bicycle. Many have a drum brake, none that I know of are made to lace in a rim.
Those hubs, the bigger ones, can take a lot of power and have a fast winding. They are good to build a powerful Ebike, are cheap for the power that they can deliver, but require a lot of mod to make them fit on a bike. You will find some building threads with them.

See "Clown bike climbs...."in the "Photos and Vids" section.

John in CR has a lot of experience with scooter hubs. Perhaps PM or look for his posts.

John's monster hub came of an xm-3000 scooter. I contacted the company that makes them, but they can't supply any more of the hubs.

Golden motor has some REALLY high power motorcycle/scooter hubs. I think they're too wide for a normal bike though.
But they're so cheap when compared to the high powered ebike market. Like $430 for a truly monster hub.

Yeah, we prefer scooter hubs...Every working ebike at our house has a scooter hub right now. Both Clown and my Dad's bike Blue have freewheels attached to their motor sidecovers. Both are laced to 14" motorcycle rims. Those have a kv=17 rpm/volt, our new high efficiency has a kv=16 for parallel position. Those are the highest kv's for DD hubs that I've seen. Not sure what HubMonster's is, but from the top speed and wheel size, I would guess around 17 or 18.

They do take some mods to fit most swingarms, especially with brakes and freewheel. If you have a steel swingarm, you may be able to spread the dropouts enough.

I will always pick a scooter hub over an ebike hub every time. You will be more than satified. Even if I didn't have a grinder and welding machine, I would find someone else who could mod the swingarm for extra length, dropout width, and add clamping dropouts, and brake mount if needed. These motors are worth every penny.

They may fit into a DH bike with 150mm dropouts. I took the side cover with the drum brake chucked it in a lathe and cut it down. the other problem is the more powerful ones don't have a place for pedal chain drive, so I bolted a hub onto the side for freewheel threads.

More details please etard? Type of motor, how you lace it to a wheel, power, price etc?

Btw, love the simple solution for putting the freewheel thread on the hub!

I'm with Andynogo, would love some more details Etard, that looks awesome. If I manage to melt my 54xx when it turns up, I am thinking my next stop will be a scooter motor. I have only been put off them in the past for their lack of freewheel etc., I would kill to have a motor that I never had to worry about overcooking. This is a great thread, something I have been meaning to ask the scooter motor users about for ages.

I'm interested in that scooter motor from GM. 3kw rating so should be good for a fair bit more. Shouldn't be too difficult to machine the turned lip off the rim and drill 36 spoke holes in either side to chuck it in a decent rim. Just need someone else to lead the way and show us sheep how to do it! Baaaa.

steveo experimented with the 1.5kW unit - stronger than the Crystalyte 5xxx, he says.

Thanks Dave. I feel itchy "pay now button" finger already. Trouble is I love experimenting - I need another garage for all the ebike projects I'd like! Double width, scooter hub, water cooled amped up 9c....... Damn you ES!

I've just been having an in depth conversation with a meth addict and I feel his pain in a weird ebike junkie kinda way!

I know exactly how you feel - i just got a bonus check and a tax refund. The idea of running an insane scooter motor is making me drool.
Unfortunately all these scooter hubs seem to have 180-200mm dropouts..

I think John in CR was saying the Kelly motors are better. Look at this bad boy: http://kellycontroller.com/hub-motor-72v-6kw13-inch-p-464.html

Rated at 6kw.

Wouldn't be hard to get a custom swing arm made up to fit the motor. You really want a custom swingarm (if not custom bike), as I personally think you would be crazy to rely on "torque plates" in a standard bike frame with one of these things, you really want something low to the ground, purpose designed, and with bolt pinching dropouts, like John in CRs bikes.

I was thinking though it would be cool to make a custom frame bike, low to the ground, with the triangle a paneled box to hold the lipo. Ever since I fitted up a mates trike with a 20" 2805 I have been keen to get a small diameter wheel bike going. A scooter hub would be awesome for throwing some insane power at.

At least you can be confident Andy that your ebike habit won't have you chewing your own cheeks out, and almost certainly won't cause you to compulsively masturbate for hours on end, and lead you to blowing bar flys in back alleys..... Unless said barfly had a 5303 in a 20inch, then I might at least consider giving him a quick wristy.... maaaybe a quick blowie.....

I thnk we're going to have to term a new expression- "this thread has been Philistined"

I would like to point out that I have none of the above symptoms except for the incessant playing with my gentleman sausage of course. I am still trying to disprove the theory that I will go blind if I do it too much...

Yes, I am renowned amongst my mates for constantly having to say the words "I'll get my coat...", and promptly vacating social functions....

Yeah that is how I feel about porn and the internet... There is waaaaay too much porn on the internet.... so I am trying to download all of it....

I've never touched a Kelly motor. LFP was looking for the motor with the longest and biggest diameter stator.

My attitude is that people shouldn't use aluminum frames, only steel ones for their ebikes, and scooter hubbies fit easily in a steel frame. Steel frames are also easily modified to have extended wheelbases, clamping dropouts, etc

etard, fantastic. well done sir.

+1

What Etard did is awesome. Work with what you can attain easily.

I did/am

Sure you need to do a lil' hacking.
Thats what its all about
If it all just bolted together, what fun would that be?

lucky for me I hacked a legal(in Ontario) scooter motor with RH freewheel.
Sure makes for an easy install, as opposed to the Kelly monster that is really a motorcycle motor.
See

I couldnt find the build thread.
But I believe thats a 48v high speed wind Kelly scooter hub Vs. DoctorBass

John was a pioneer of scooter hub use, & now that I know his secret, I will be on the hunt for cheap Xm scooters

Though I do lust after the Kelly combo.
Especially the 72v HS hub.

Before I stopped drinking I never finished a social function.

Even by my drunkass friends

This is sort of how my nickname developed.

Shortened to Brentis & it stuck.
