Up and Running - Thanks to ES

Postby kudos » Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:14 am

I've got my first bike on the road and I'm loving it!

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all those on the forum who have helped me thus far with a special thanks to Hugues, Hjns, Dogman, Ice57 and NeilP.

I think the big thing I have learned is that most of my questions could have been answered by using the brilliant ebike simulator.
My intention was always to build a test-bed bike to learn what kind of speeds, distances and hill climbing ability I would get in the real world with my setup.
As it turns out, so far after testing, the simulator has given me data to within a few percent of real world results.

Notice to all noobs like myself, play around with the ebike simulator, it's a bit daunting at first but it utterly invaluable in working out what kind of setup you need to build, to achieve your goals.

I bought a single 10S nanotech lipo battery which I run from 42V Hot down to 36.5V on 40A with a hs3540. I've set my LVC to 36.5 on my xlyte APM.
To my amazement it propels me at 25mph which is (currently) as fast as I want to go with a range of about 5 miles and my awesome lipo harness from ice will allow me to add more lipo in parallel and series.
What has amazed me the most though is that I can climb what I consider to be very steep hills throttle only. The grin-factor is high when doing this I can assure you.... :D

I have two 6S bricks winging their way to me now, so combined with the 10S brick I'll have the option of 10S1P, 12S1P and 11S2P.
My controller's max voltage is 55V so in theory I could go to 13S 54.6V but I honestly don't think I need 32mph just yet.

I'm now more interested in range, the cavernous capacity of my falconev frame bag means I could fit more lipo then I'm ever likely to need !

Once again thanks to all who have helped thus far.

Kudos

How do you make 11S2P?

My nanotech 10S is actually just two 5S wrapped together, so I can treat it as either a 10S or two 5S.

So 5S plus the 6S = 11S

I have a 2S2P lipo harness from ice giving me the ability to do 11S2P.

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback, it's what keeps us at it.

To make your 11s pack, you'd need to unwrap it I guess, to acess the main wires and add a plug. I suggest you invest in some more 6s, for a 6s 10 ah pack. The 10s pack can be still carried only when you want extra range. Run the 12s, then unplug and run your 10s to finish the ride. For now, you can run 12s for awhile, then run 10s.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

See battery technology section, FAQ thread at the top of the page for lipo noob info.

Agh yes of course, I didn't think of that. I had it in my head I needed to have the whole pack available at all times, but of course I can simply carry some more lipo and swap when needed, only takes 2mins.

Nice one.

We're on neighbouring Islands, NeilP is on Jersey which is slightly bigger than Guernsey, but both pretty small.

Check them out on Google maps:

I think HobbyKing EMS Speed Shipping should change its name it EMS Slow Shipping.

It's expensive and has taken 2 weeks to get to me this time, still I have my two 6s bricks now, think I might have to take tomorrow off work to experiment!

I've had to send my APM (Crystalyte version of Cycle Analyst) back because it has some fingerprints and condensation on the inside of the unit.

I'm just wondering if it's safe to use my bike without anything limiting the current? (My controller can go to 40A)

Without a BMS controlling current or indeed a CA/APM doing the same, will it blow my controller when pushed too hard - I have no idea?

Can someone let me know, I've had more lipo turn up I'm itching to use !

Cheers,

Wow.

I just went on my first actual ebike ride where I needed to actually get somewhere.

Image

Over 11Km round trip including a huge hill - 122m climb, 27mph top speed on the flat, on two tiny 6S LiPo bricks, making 12S1P and only down to 3.78 per cell at the end so still some to spare.

LiPo is bizarrely powerful.

The monster hill on my Island which is a main road, but is also sometimes used for 'The Hill Climb' motorsport, is only 925m long but rises 74m giving a max slope of 24%.

Well on 12S Lipo I was able to ride up this beast as if it were flat, grinning all the way :D

This is a game changer for me, I honestly didn't think my first ebike would be capable of this. It means I can go anywhere and not worry about any hills.

Also, after testing, I've found that the furthest point from where I live to where I need to go, which is 6 miles, 12 round trip, can be done on the 9aH of lipo I already have.

I was expecting to have to do a lot more experimenting before I found the setup I needed, but no, first time out thanks to ES.

Cheers,
