Ping 60v 10aH with 48v controller, possible?

Postby richdeloup » Sun Mar 11, 2012 5:29 pm

Hi all, need some advice if possible for someone who is half way to getting his head around all this but not quite there!
Im currently using a Ping 48v 10aH on a standard Chinese 48v ebay kit. The motor is advertised at 1000w and the controller and throttle 48v.
Would there theoretically be any problems if i upgraded to a Ping 60v running the same bike kit? I understand that the controllers and motors are sometimes capable of a higher voltage, is this true? also if something did blow, would it prob be the controller as i can afford a replacement but dont want to damage the battery?
Many thanks in advance for any help on this.

Wont damage the battery at all, and it should be fine with everything otherwise if its kept below 63V, but as you say its pretty cheap to get a new controller and a 72V one is easy to get. Only thing you will need to look at will be the throttle as if it has the power level indicators in it they may die, but the throttle part itself will be fine.

what controller? did you open it to see what the value of the input capacitors is? most likely it will blow when you are a long way from home. 60V is not 60V.

Yeah, 60v is more around 70v, or higher fully charged in the lifepo4 world.

Sorry bluefang, but i don't agree. This controller most likely has 63v caps and FETs that aren't capable of more than 63v either. Open it up and see what the voltage rating on the big caps is. Then go find out what FETs you have, look them up online and see what the voltage rating for those is as well.

Good way to blow a controller is to run it above it's rating.

Just opened the controller and rated at 63v. So it's prob luck of the draw if itl blow on a freshly charged 60v ping. I'll prob go ahead and get a 72v controller then. Any recommendations as to the best one to buy or do they pretty much do the same job?
