Thanks, that makes a lot more sense. So the driver is an actual CC LED driver - it just has a wide input range. That also means that you really can't run the light off a 12v source without the driver module.

If anyone can tell more specifically which actual LED emitters are in this thing, I'd be interested. Close-up pictures might help. Thanks.

I've only ridden about 100km with mine so far due to bad weather. I like it and would recommend it for any bike. Get two for 35+ mph. The driver is a switched supply with current limiter and gets quite warm but not hot. The casing gets hot with no air flow, but stays cool during the ride.

I suppose you guys are right about CC led driver, just noticed it is not doing any CV function, I have full input voltage on the output if not connected to leds, so 12v on LED side is just coincidence and will change with temperature of led chips. Sorry for misinforming everyone.

Though I haven't actually looked at the flamethrower end of the light while it is on, it appears to have smaller LEDs between each large LED, can anyone confirm that those light up too?

Those are kind of pins on the lens holding led pcb in place.

You get what you pay for, so the included mounting brackets were pretty useless and I had to make my own. Also the wires between the light and the driver are heat shrinked, but not soldered. Here it is installed on the bike.

Do you recon one of these can be rigged directly to the CA power pads from the battery in the same way as the e-bikes.ca Cycle Luminator is?
The GF does not want a bright light on her bike...yea, weird I know, but I fitted my 1200 lumen lamp to her bike a while ago, and she did not like it..she want to see less..women eh?

So any idea what sort of current these (as listed in the topic title) draw

At this price I may even order two

I wonder what the difference is between the 24-90V and the 12-90V models. The regulator must be different. They have all gone up a few dollars, and the wider range regulator is 35$ compared to 33$ for the 24-90. But it might be more useful in some situations.

These regulators are switching, Neil, so they will draw constant power, more or less. So the current will = 24 Watts / ?? Volts, just like the Cycle Lumenator. So the current should be pretty low if your voltage is high.

Might have to put a pair of these on the 'Borg... :)

Not a massively high voltage..just a 12s pack on the gf's bike so only 50volts...so it will be half an amp or so in that case.

Here is a light I saw on another moped forum. DX special http://www.dealextreme.com/p/10w-800-lu ... 26v-101461

I hear the beam is funky and square, but for that price it is hard to beat.

Yes, that is a nice little lamp, but to run that on the gf's bike I would need to run a dc-dc.., like the Cycle Luminator has

The optic is focussing the LED die into the pattern. That type of design is usually low in efficiency due to the lost beam coming from the LED at angles wider than the optic. Their quoted output is probably die lumens, the actual output will likely be far less.

The TIR optics on the Lumenator, or the lamp that is the subject of this thread are generally more efficient as they capture all the output from the LED and reflect it internally very efficiently. Also the high voltage converters on these lights are helpful if you don't have 12V available on the bike.

It would be interesting to see a side by side beamshot to verify this.

FYI geoman gear has the 1000 lm magic shine on sale this month -- it's better IMO because it ships from the US.

That's a good idea, can't wait this light to be properly compared to other known lamps. It's still not warm enough here to ride during the night, but soon it will be, and I'm very interested to see how this light stacks up against single LED P7 and XM-Ls.

Do you know if it will work with a remote switch or you always have to cycle the button on the light itself ? Also, what are the power requirements ?

When it's plugged in it by default comes on high, without buttons, so depending on what you want to do a switch would work. I think it takes about 15w, but don't quote me on that. I have one, and now a second on the way.

Good, since I have a remote switch on my recumbent bike. One more question - is it relatively white or has the bluish tint ?

It's definitely white, but there is a bluish hue to it.. not cool white, definitely not warm white.

Not sure we are talking about the same light. I just got the MJ-808E XML head from geomangear and it does not "remember" the power setting and always comes in the "off" state when plugged in. The remote switch is not an option.
Few notes for those considering it:
- It takes 0.8A on full at 12.5V, there are 3 levels of brightness and no blinker.
- It has a clearly defined round spot (a bit small to my taste, I am used to flood beam) and rather weak flood area.
- The color in the spot is a pleasant white (warmer than my trailtech HID) with no blue tint (if anything there is a very slight greenish tint to it). There is some blue tint in the flood area but not in the spot.
- Mounting may be a problem for some, the light does not pivot and sits very close to the handlebar (uses rubber rings instead of a usual clamp). It may interfere with the cabling because of proximity to the handlebar (it does on our bikeE recumbent had to move things around to mount it).

So do one of these lights start in the ON position? I have my current halogen lights and tail lights rigged up with a simple spst switch to my 12v dc-dc. I like this simplicity.
