Charging/balancing lipo without reconfiguring wires? Is ther

Postby BATFINK » Tue Apr 03, 2012 11:48 am

Hey guys I'm in need of some advice. I am building another ebike and I want to use the new ebike frame by phasor, picture attached. I will need a minimum of 48volts and a minimum of 30amps to cover the distance I want, my problem is if I build a pack from lipo bricks would I need to be disconnecting wires all the time and connecting a charging harness to charge, because of the frame I want to buy I want to have the batteries enclosed for neatness and security and just plug the bike in for charging and not have to mess around with wires/harnesses every time, I notice this is the setup on many commercial bikes such as stealth bomber etc. Currently I use a Ping 48volt battery and it's just a simple case of plugging it in and not messing around, is there a solution?
Thanks for any help as always, because of this forum I have started studying electronics in my spare time so I can get up to speed with the more technical areas.

Methods parallel boards and HVC breaker is the route I've chosen (see For Sale - New Items area). Attached is a couple of sketches - one for bulk charging a 24s2p setup that builds on a sketch that Ryan had done earlier - this would be a single PP plug mounted into the Pelican 1300 battery case; and one sketch for balance charging which would be done as 2 series 12s2p packs, and would require opening the case to access the balance leads and remove the series / parallel jumper.

I haven't built this yet, but it is my plan right now.

If you were going with a 12s lipo setup, you would just delete one half of the setup.

Yes sounds good to use those HVC by methods but still would have to mess around with wires to charge, I want a totally plug and play system, I'm not afraid to disconnect on occasion but want to just plug it in the majority of times.

Have a look at the series parralel changer i made on my 2nd build, link below, totally plug and play, the bike is running 18s 16ah lipo constructed of 6 x 6s8000mah zippy bricks and balance charges off an icharger 306b.

You good buy a bulk charger and use that most of the time. Only time you would need to muck about then is o do a balance charge periodically...

Hyperion 1420i charger. You will require an rc charger for balancing anyway. One power supply + one charger does all (bulk + balance charge), in series (no special harness for series/parallel, disconnecting/reconnecting). And at the price the 1420i is going for (~$130), I feel this is probably the simplest and most cost effective charging solution. As a bonus, the graphing software for monitoring your packs is awesome.

Mostly all you need is a wiring harness that brings the plugs to a small acess hatch. This will work with or without the hvc lvc boards.

Then you plug in several RC chargers, one big RC charger, or a bulk charger depending on your choice of charging method.

Have you even looked at ways to handle 12s? most of them are stupidly simple. It's 20s 24s etc that gets really complicated.

Thanks guys, I didn't realise it was a lot easier with 12s not too worried after you out it in perspective Dogman, Tench, yes I saw your specialised build, was really nice, have you a diagram of how you did that series parallel changer? Pretty neat. If I put my deposit down for my frame it still won't be here for 2 or 3 months, having just blew my knee ligaments wrestling I will have plenty of time to perfect the build so thanks for the advice guys, I might make up the pack and use it on my current bike to get used to using lipo just until I get started on my new build. Cheers

Good idea. A small 12s pack is a really good way to introduce yourself to lipo with less economic risk. Then when you have the hang of it, and understand things better, go for the expensive larger pack. At that point from 12s to 18s is a fairly easy jump.

I have just put my deposit down for my phasor frame and have also been looking at lipo packs.

I am looking at having Chris make me a battery 68 volt 25 amp. After 2 hours today talking to Chris who races electric bikes I have a better understanding. To make the charging process safe you need to invest in a good charger which stops if a cell is fully charged.

Batfink,
You've probably already seen it, but IceCube can help you out. Check his harness services here:
