Full Suspension Bike Frame Wanted

Postby coldfusion594 » Thu Mar 29, 2012 10:58 am

Hello all,

I am looking to build an electric bike and being that I am on a serious budget, I decided that it may be cheaper to just build my own bike. Right now I am focusing on a full-suspension bike frame. Reasonably priced but the idea is to not spend too much because that would defeat the purpose. The frame must be light and sturdy.

If you do not have one, no worries! please send me in a direction that may help me on my quest :P

Thanks again!

I have a full suspension aluminum white MTB frameset hanging in the garage. I used it for 2 years with a BMC hub motor and a Ping battery mounted on the top tube. This is a nice handling MTB bike and in very good used condition with minor chips and scratches. No dents, cracks, etc.

Here's the bike.

What you get:
White "Windsor Ghost 6500" frame
Rockshox Dart 1 suspension fork
Upgraded Fox rear air shock
handlebars
low end cranks
chain
seat
low end disk brake calipers
front derailleur
kickstand

No wheels, rear der, shifters, cables, Bottom Bracket, rack
$225 + shipping.

Also I'll throw in the rear rack for another $10

Thanks for the welcoming, Hah I'm used to paintball forums so this new bike concept is very new to me, but the possibilities are endless and there is a lot of tinkering around

Thanks for the input, but I'm looking for a frame with a little more space in it for batteries (hate to be picky), and possibly a little less expensive. I just have a vision in my head and for some reason that frame does not fit the vision.

Thanks though

Been looking for a frame like that for over a year, dude.
Far and few between, they are.

Then there is the problem of making torque plates / arms, after you find an old school frame with triangle space.
Then there is the problem that old frames that have triangle space tend to be flexy.

GT LTS and Proflex frames are the closest i have ever found so far.

That windsor could probably fit 4 lipo packs and a controller ( 9fet ) in the triangle... not bad actually, if you hook some additional battery up in parallel/series using a rear rack.

There is also the oatnet battery mounting method, which i'm going to experiment with soon.

The Bus: ??? on a 'da bomb' cargo bike frame

Pro-tips for noobs: Avoid BMS Battery like the plague | Charge RC Lipos to 4.15v, stop discharging at 3.5-3.6v | Use torque plates/arms! | Rear mounted hubs are always best

Oh, also a Cannondale Jekyll is something to bust a nut over, if you can find a large / extra large version.

That is... IF you can find one at a reasonable price!

And there's also the Delta V. But no disc brake capability and it's quite old so the fork is very likely blown to hell.
I believe this design also has major problems with chain slack / slap.

wal-mart bikes use this antiquated style of suspension now.

Looks Iike a pretty sick bike to buy. It's a pain trying to find a full suspension bike with a big ole triangle to fit the precious battery's in. :D

I'm putting together my first dual suspension bike too. It's not going to be my main ebike, it's just a fun project, so I want to keep it fairly inexpensive. Finding a quality bike that someone bought and never used would be ideal but who has the time to search.

I would agree with a previous poster that if you want dual suspension and you want it CHEAP it's hard to beat that $150 Genesis V2100. It's definitely low end with only a SPRING for a rear suspension with no damping...but hey it's NEW. Among DS bikes it also has a fair amount of room in the triangle for batteries. You could use a simple triangle frame bag with this one.

Another inexpensive bike, the Mongoose Vanish, is available for around $220 but the suspension intrudes into the triangle even more.

Here's another suspension design available in the inexpensive Kent Shogun Trail which allows some space to mount batteries on the downtube.

I finally settled on the Schwinn Protocol 1.0 which is on it's way to me now. It has a STEEL rear triangle with an aluminum main triangle, a simple single pivot suspension and a front fork with STEEL lowers (should I want to try DUAL motors). It also should fit me (with a longer seatpost). Price: $265 delivered.

If you really want maximum room in the triangle however you may have to skip FULL suspension and go with front suspension only. And of course if you want to pay very little money you're going to have to spend the time and do the legwork to find it on Craigslist or local yard sales.

I searches fora a long time on craigslist before metallover referred me to pink bike.com. I found a very affordable frame in my area within a week.

There are full suspension bikes out there that don't take up too much space in the triangle, however I am now considering buying a relatively cheap bike (possibly hard tail) just so I can work on it, I was thinking about putting a chain drive motor on it anyway and seeing as those are much trickier than hub motors it would be a good idea to just get a crappy bike to work on. However I cannot compromise on disk brakes (need 'em)

I really hate to be "that guy" who points out all the flaws but... the triangle isn't big enough :P
unless! you think 4 zippy lipo batteries can fit snugly, with a motor and a remote :D

haha great bike though!

Old pic but

Works great for me because I remove the battery and leave it in my locker after I get to school, so it isn't in the triangle but I also need removable batteries

Thanks for going through the trouble man, I just realized that I have plans for a chain drive motor. And the frame there already looks like it is packed, and I do not know how I would put the motor in there... unless I put it behind the seat

Too many dam possibilities, hah I need to think this through first.
