X-Treme Scooters XM-3150 Problem

Postby woodyvt » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:18 pm

Hi,

I need a replacement throttle for an X-Treme Scooters XM-3150 (60v 3000w) I have been calling X-Treme Scooters for over a month but all I get is their voicemail and they never call back.

I tried swapping over the throttle from an X-Treme Scooters XB-508 (48v 700w) that I also have but not sure if the voltage is wrong? It's all good when I turn the key on but as soon as I turn the throttle even the slightest bit, I hear a soft "thunk" in the hub-motor and nothing happens. Is the throttle the wrong voltage? Most electric scooter parts websites indicate that they should be compatible? Maybe a failed hall sensor in the hub-motor?
I'm an auto body tech, not an electrician and I am baffled by this formerly $2000 electric motor driven moped. It has been nothing but a boat anchor for three months while I have waited for warm weather and a return call from X-Treme Scooters.

This adventure all started one day when I had just turned the key on... I just rested my hand on the throttle and the thing decided that it wanted to go forward at full throttle. My reaction time wasn't the greatest but I did get on the brakes but that did no good and the bike slammed itself into a wall. It only stopped when we fell together and the throttle broke apart when the handlebar end hit the ground as we went down.

I have cystic fibrosis so my inability to breath adequately from pedaling a conventional bicycle keeps me stuck at home (we have one car and the wife uses it for work). I need my bike back.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Anyone near Vermont, USA willing to look at it?

Can you take pics of the existing throttle? Specifically the wiring. How many wires? Is this a brushed motor? I'm quite sure one of the gurus here can help you solve the problem.

The original throttle was smashed and trashed. I think I through it out but I'll look around for it. I'll post a pic if I can find it.

The motor is a brushless 60v 3000w hub-motor.

The throttle will be most probably the same type as on virtually any other ebike/e-scooter/e-moped. There is a hall sensor inside and three wires, 5V (RED), GND (BLACK) and output (usually green or yellow).

I have the same scoot. You can contact the manufacturer directly and get the right answer the first time.

How do I find out the actual manufacturer? Doesn't X-Treme Scooters sell products from many different manufacturers?

This is the actual manufacturer, http://www.tradevv.com/chinasuppliers/echoxia

X-treme is a Brand name Mountain Chen put on the ZAP scooter. If you want parts, contact M. Chen or Joey, both communicate in English. ZAP sell full containers of scooters, no parts.

I ordered and received the suggested throttle replacement from TNC Scooters. Unfortunately the connectors that came on it do not fit my wiring harness. I have ordered a connector kit as well and I'm waiting for that.

This reminds me of when the circuit breaker on my XM-3500li would trip and I would forget to reset it. The capacitors in the controller would charge up through the precharge resistor. When I would twist the throttle the controller would have just enough power stored in the caps to make a faint noise in the motor.

If anyone is still watching this thread....

I got the new throttle that was suggested and installed it. Batteries fully charged. Still has a brief and soft singular "thunk" in the hubmotor when powered on. Lights all work but no response from the wheel/ hubmotor except the annoying "thunk".

Wired to corresponding wire colors of the original wire harness. Wiring correct?

Argh!

What's next?

PS; I have no clue what a multimeter does or what the numbers mean. Yes, I have one but clearly unqualified to use and understand one.

Are there any red LED lights flashing anywhere? If there are, count the number of flashes between the longer pauses. I don't have an XM-3150, but a lot of scooters have built-in diagnostic codes that can help identify the problem.

Does the motor *thunk* only once per power cycle? Like, you turn the throttle, it makes the noise, and then you can't get it to do it again until your turn the controller off and then back on?

I think the XM-3150 has a circuit breaker, right? Make sure it isn't tripped.

If that doesn't solve it, elevate the rear wheel off the ground. With the scooter off, turn the wheel by hand. Does it spin relatively freely? Let us know if you feel any vibration-like feedback. Next, turn the scooter on and twist the throttle so that you hear the thunk, and with the throttle engaged, try turning the wheel by hand. Does it still spin freely, or is it locked into place? Again, let us know the result and we'll have a better understanding of what's going on.

Another thought: sometimes with a crash a wiring harness will become loose. The throttle signal actually passes through two connectors before reaching the controller. Once up front by the handle bars, and a second connector closer to the controller. Did the throttle wires get crushed in the accident?

Also, check the wiring harnesses between the motor and controller. There should two sets of colored wires (yellow, blue, green), thin ones and thick ones. The thick ones are what power the motor. The thin ones are what tells the controller the rotational position of the motor. Examine the thin wires' harness.
