New thumb throttle..............

Hey Guys,

A while back I had an idea that I never did anything with. Well, I finally decided to go ahead and try it and, it works great!

This is a simple Delrin thumb tab that I machined on the CNC. It presses onto the twist tube of a Magura twist grip throttle. I have never found a thrumb throttle I liked. But, the Magura twist grip is very sturdy and just plain works. So, to that end, I wanted to incorporate that great throttle into something relative easy to manufacture and this is what I came up with.

Once the twist tube is cut short on the throttle, the thumb tab merely presses on. Friction holds it in place. If more holding power is desired, a simple dab of superglue (or good CA) will hold it in place more firmly.

Anyway, these things take a bit of time to make because they are machined, not injection molded. But, if you have an interest in one, they are $15 each (plus shipping).

Just a comment though, I find having the entire twist throttle as well as the thumb tab helpful on longer rides. I think this is because the hand can share the pressure of keeping the throttle applied along with the thumb.

With a long enough thumb tab for leverage (and a short enough travel ) it's easy enough on the thumb even with longer trips.

I haven't tried tabbing a twistgrip (yet ) but when I just used a long lever on a pot, and also just a pot with a knob that had tabs long enough to use like a thumb throttle, it was nice and easy in traffic or on long uninterrupted stretches for a few miles at a time.

I suspect these will be easy like that too.

Nice. I kept breaking the thumb tab off cheap throttles from having the thing full throttle when I hit a big bump. I learned to convert thumb throttles to half twist ones, and found that the best thing was half twist with a thumb tab. Less hand fatigue on longer rides with both.

Oh, Man, I gotta find a few links for you.

The coolest builds have all been sold (except my 22,000 watt trike). The wheelie machine is the PK Ripper with two Astro Flight 3210 motors. That bike was only 10,000 watts. But, it weelies like a freaking factory crosser. It has thrown off every person who has ever ridden it. Hazardous bugger.

I went to the shop and dug up 3 of these thumb throttle tabs. It is just the plastic thumb tab. You will need to remove the grip and shorten the twist tube. Then you will need to put a dab of super glue on the tube and press the thumb tad on.

$10 each plus shipping. Odds are oversees shipping is going to be $15 even for such a small item.

Thought they were black anodised aluminium at first. At least I know they're up to standard Shumaker quality.

The problem with this, and other thumb throttles, is that there is no
"safety" lock which prevents them from accidentally being depressed
you are trying to park the bike or getting into an elevator, etc.

Your design, while convenient, just makes the problem worse, as it sticks
out farther!!..

Would it be possible to put in some sort of "lock" or "safety" latch to
prevent this problem?

A key switch? on a DIY bike ? I can't afford an A2B.. and most bikes sold in cheapo kits, like mine, had no separate power
switch on the controller.

But some sort of safety interlock, to prevent the throttle from engaging when you are moving the bike around by hand
shouldn't be that difficult... but I haven't seen it.

This thumb throttle is very nice, and is well built and looks real nice.. but it has the same problem that all the
other thumb throttle's have.

I highly recomend a power switch for the controller on your handlebars. Loose conection in the throttle wiring often results in WOT and sporadic behaviour.

Not saying a throttle safety lock isn't worth pursuing if it suits you though.

Actually, that is another thing that is a frequent source of chagrin, rain on the throttle, causing a short!!!

A lot of the fast food places that use e-bikes put a plastic bag over the throttle!!... good idea in my book!!

On CrazyBike2, I just used an old keyswitch I found in a junk box, originally from a Briggs&Stratton something-or-other according to the key, so it cost me nothing. I wired it up to the "ignition" wire on the controller (the thin red power wire, rather than the main power wire). Then I installed the switch into my hollow steerer tube on the handlebars, using foam tape around the switch to hold it in place.

On DayGlo Avenger, I used a cheap Chinese keyswitch donated to me, and I wired it directly in series with the actual power to the Lyen 6FET controller. The switch is probably a $10 item at most, and isn't very great quality, but it hasn't failed yet, despite the loads I am putting thru it, up to 30A or higher momentary peaks and 4-8A constant. I would actually recommend only using it like I did the one above, to cut the "ignition" wire.


You could even use the keyswitch off of an old computer case--lots of "generic" computers used to have a keyswitch with electrical contacts built in, that can easily be removed from the case an mounted on the bike. A portion of the casing can be cut off around the siwtch, and used to make the mounting plate, if necessary. Even nowadays some computer stores still sell separate keyswitches to add on, and some cases sold by Antec and the like also have them installed, but there are so many old computers laying around as trash that it's easy to find one that has the switch...harder to find one with the keys still with it, though, unless they were left inside or as many old Compaqs came--with the key on a ring on the fan exhaust grille.

I see.. dig through a junk yard to find a keyswitch... cut off some loose wire, attach these wires to the controller wires..

Where to mount the keyswitch/control switch.. no problem.. just let it dangle in the wind..

Oh, find a key? Easy...

But I fear that we are polluting this thread excessively.. I will start a new thread on throttles and cut-ff switches.
