Hobby King Zippy Compact

Hi Everyone,

I was just checking out HK's new Zippy compact and I clicked on the 8S 5800 bricks, so I waited as usual for the price to drop, added to cart x 6 for a total of 16S 3P for 17.4 AH capacity.

The HK shopping cart calculated this to weigh only 6.1kgs ? that can't be right my 16S 2P 10ah weighs 6.5 kgs ?

That means the 17.4 ah pack would weigh 4 grams less than the 10ah pack ???

By the way I was looking for 4S bricks but they don't have any. I will get a while out of my old pack yet, I was just browsing. but shocked!

But they won't ship because they it's too heavy for my destination, and they don't have any in the Euro warehouse ?

My friend just bought them one by one, shipped by air mail.
I do that regularly with 2 or 3pc of 4S bricks whenever they're in stock
No customs delay and no taxes to pay for small packets here in Slovakia.

According to the shipping weight the zippy compact are about 20% lighter for the same Ah

Yes, these are particularly light and small.. as close to NMC as you're gonna get. That is their appeal. Don't expect them to even touch their rated C though, i'm sure they're overrated by a factor of 2 just like my other zippy packs are.

I bought a ton of 15C 6S zippies before they came out. within 2% of the size and weight of my 5S 20C turnigys.. . These are even better..

Yeah Nep I remember your post. I think you were the first to bring them to our attention ?

But I didn't expect to get an extra 7.2ah and loose 4 grams!

It's only when I added them to the basked I saw the total weight!

I have already got 4 of them. They are:

5538
5544
5461
mah for the first cycle 4.19-3.0v - so real capacity is around 166wh/kg(I measured average voltage at 3.78 under 10a load at 50%SOC)
IR is about 1-2mOhm per cell according to iCharger
looks really great for me!
I will fill my pelican case with them - it will be 1.8kwrs at ~11.3kg + the weight of the case.

Here's a screenshot of a spreadsheet I use to select batteries from Hobby King.

I entered data for your existing batteries (I'm guessing on what you've got) and the Zippy Compacts you mention above...and a few others.

I break things into some Key Metrics at the bottom. I calculate WH as based on Target Charge and Discharge values, then estimate voltage with a geometric approximation of the discharge curve (in this case (Hot Voltage + 2* Nominal Votage ) / 3. ) This gets me something closer to real world estimates with which to compare the packs.

Indeed the Zippy Compacts have the wh / weight. In terms of wh / vol, the Turnigy longpacks are better. In terms of cost / wh, the Zippy Compacts are quite expensive.

Anyway, I realize it's hard to compare packs like this since there are many other factors involved, but I find this approach lets me select what I want to pay for...better capacity, lower weight, or lower volume.

Awesome Spreadsheet! That's the way to do it. It would be cool to see the hardcase packs on there too, since they're so cheap. The compact cells seem pretty solid.

You have to enter data in metric (since that's what Hobby King uses), but you can switch the results between Eng and Metric with the Units selection. The currency selection is for display only..and doesn't actually convert anything.

I also like to paste the URL in the weblink cell so I can get back to the web site quickly. The Add To Table button just saves your data out to the side. The Clear Table button at the bottom just clears all those results.
