Ebikes making a comeback in 2012 ?

Postby lester12483 » Mon Mar 05, 2012 3:34 pm

Anyone else feel that this is the year ebikes can make a comeback? I do. Or is it sales always increase this time of year?

With the geo political climate and rising gas prices I think the perfect storm is brewing.

Aren't "rated" values suppose to correlate with the # of cycles the battery is rated for (1000 in this case)? If so, I don't see how you can say it's rated at 2c, which is it's *max* continuous ability.

Whatever the rating is, you rarely see a cycle life test results at that rating.

Some will do the cycle life test at 1c, others may do it at .1 c. In this case, the above specs do not tell you what c rate the cycle life tests were done at.

Additionally, they generally give cycle lifespan for a single cell, not the chances that say 50 cells will all make it to 1000 cycles when put into a pack.

Ping, for example tests his 2c battery at 1c. Using it most of the lifespan at 1c, I was quite happy when my original 1c rated ping went 700 cycles.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

See battery technology section, FAQ thread at the top of the page for lipo noob info.

I like your optimism!

I've got an electric (conversion) bike, but because my commute is too far (80 miles round trip).

I'm really waiting for someone to build an electric, aerodynamic, tadpole (leaning?!) trike, using as many mass production parts as possible. Hey maybe that someone is me! no production though, just a one off.

I am just glad to see more people considering buying an ebike. It's really a better option than a gas scooter for getting around.

From my opinion , e-bike parts started to be available for reasonable prices (Gas prices helps this also).

And why I am motivated to "have" an e-bike?

My motivation points:

-gas prices
-economy / ecology
-in car I am not movin a muscle...
-it can be faster than car in some conditions.
-I am not tree-hugger, but I like the idea not to move 2Tons of steel just to trasnport 80kg for quite short distance.
-gas powered scooter has to be "road legal" , e-bike just should.. its tolerated....

Will pulling 1000W from the 48v12Ah be pushing things too far? I am not looking for 1000 cycles... but not 100 either. Anyone have any experience with this?

Phoebus, if your max power is 1000 watts (i.e, 20A), I dont think its too much. The majority of the time you will not be running 1000 watts. You will however be at the edge of this pack. Some of the 20A controllers actually allow through more than 20A, so make sure you're actually dealing with a ~20-22A controller.

The exception to this response is that if your usage pattern involves a lot of hills, even small hills over a long distance, you're liable to be pulling that max rating for a longer period of time (which is bad).

Just if you choose to go this way do so with caution. People have a lot of mixed responses about this 2C rating. 2C is definitively at the max of the pack. Bear in mind I am speaking from observation and not personal experience, though Im not sure one is particularly more valid than the other in this case.
New to endless-sphere? Notice a lot of signatures recommending Ebike.ca? That's because it's the best place for a quality and manageable, (but still 'real'), first build. Justin is a solid supporter of electric bike development, and a good source of equipment.

My hat off a thousand times to the green people that effectively run this forum. The ES Mods are superb.

Just installed the 48V 13AH battery on a conversion job for my 1st paying customer. I set the CA for 25amps which is about 1400 watts fully charged. Performance seems good so far, I just hope it lasts....

Ebike becomes more and more popular.

It will be a very good option to commute to a not too far working place.
Courier are driving their ebike to deliver small parcels.
Resident just drive an ebike to buy things in residential zone.
It can cover 15-25 miles cycle in a very low cost.
It saves money for you and you have more money to improve your life.

And even you have a car, you still will still need a bike or ebike as it's a samll and convenient vehicle.

geoline is getting less and less. And of course, the price are getting higher and higher.
Also it's not possible that every people drive a car(about 4-6,000,000,000 cars) even if it takes money as a ebike. Waste and emission will just harm people.
Environmentally friendly, practical and economical life will be the trend of development of future.
www.evassemble.com all for EVs.
Keeping LiFePO4 battery 80% DOD and not too big constant current will always help a better cycle life.
