Felt MP Cruiser - my new ride

Postby Willow » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:00 pm

...just bought a FELT Mp Cruiser from the USA (shipping was a killer).... got 24S LIPO and an HS35 hubbie for it. There seems to be a lot of people who have put petrol engines on them, but can't find anyone who has done an electric conversion.... Anyone??

No brakes on the front wheel, and a coaster brake on the rear.... plans are for front and rear discs, so need some mounts for calipers, re-lace both wheels and a new hub (disc compliant) on front. Would be easier to put the motor in the front wheel, and keep the 3-speed in the rear... but would mean trading in the HS rear motor. Will make that decision when I have the bike in hand.

...fix-ed the image. Good to see you back on-line bud-dee (or am I just out of touch).

Will plan an outrunner set-up in-time... will wear the dress until then. Have been looking for a bike for such a long time - only recently discovered the Felts... they have some nice models indeedy.

have been waiting 3-months now for the Engineer to write his report so I can get the trike on the road (so slack)... it gets the tick though. In the mean time I want something to get to work on that I can get some physical activity happening - sitting on a computer all day looking at bikes just aint cutting it.

Saw this one at Maker Faire a few years back..

..quite a bit different than what you have in mind for your build, but they started with essentially the same bike.
The MP was my favorite version, so I look forward to seeing how this one turns out. Have fun!

I LOVE those MP bikes. I posted a couple years ago about wanting to do one of those, but never got around to it. Will be watching for sure!

I got a Felt Lifeguard Surf Cruiser that I've put a cheap yxm kit on.
There is a video somewhere on youtube where another Felt Crusier's been "electrified".
I put a rear V-brake adaptor on my felt, not in the traditional place. I put it on the bottom of the "swing arm" - near the fender screw hole.
Good luck to you! I look forward to seeing this hun in action.

Totally love the look of Felt Cruisers - dey da bomb :D . I was just drooling over one for sale on craigslist. If you decide to go front hub motor you could possibly put a Shimano IGH with roller brake on rear (like eZee does on some of their models) - just a thought. Looking forward to your build, Willow.

O.T. Nope, just a relatively unknown Bellinghamster with a new-found interest in e-bikes. Better yet, the Spark Museum is the place to go for anyone who loves anything old and electric! For instance - http://www.sparkmuseum.com/MOTORS.HTM - we owe it to those guys ...

Kona Minute midtail cargo bike w/ dual 350W MAC kits, 36V/15Ah Headway battery kit, and CA V3 - heavy but very stable, eats hills.
GT Timberline MTB w/ integrated torque-sensor motor, sine-wave controller, and LCD display - nice, smooth, quiet ride.
Ultra Motor Europa pre-built - good range, but noisy brushed Heinzmann motor struggles up hills.

Nice one, what did it set you back ? I was looking at doing a MP cruiser a few years back but in the end couldnt bring myself to pay the $2000 odd they were selling for locally. Definately a cool looking bike though.

Unless you are committed to doing a disc upfront, you might also consider the 90mm Sturmey-Archer drum brakes. They are supposedly very comparable to discs, all weather, and very low maintenance. They would also look more period correct. I couldn't believe it but on my local Craigslist this evening someone had posted one of these bikes for sale at $250! I left the page open for awhile before I noticed the posting and by the time I clicked on it it had already been removed....presumably it sold pretty quick.

..The drum brake sounds like the go! Thanks Studebiker...

got a kick in the pants last night... an e-mail from the shop...

Simon

Shipping to Tazmania, unfortunately, on a bike this size will be closer to
$1000 at least. We've shipped there before.

Ouch! it's a pitty that their shipping calculator doesn't work properly when your checking out your cart. I'm asking him for an exact quote, and options other than UPS.. For 1K I could fly there and pick one up from the shop.

still want it.

OUCH
No option for cheaper sea shipping ?

How set are you on that exact bike ? If you want to mod and customise it a bit you could get this one for around half what you're talking
http://www.bikeexchange.com.au/bicycles ... /102065987
Same bike just different forks and bars and a different colour. Shipping to tassy would be under $200 so even after repainint it and buying the other bits you'd have to come out in front.
You could also customise it exactly to your tastes too.

Got any mates in the US ?
If you're going to put the HS on the back and relace the front too it sounds like you could do away the wheels alltogether (have you checked the rear is 36 hole?)
If not I'd hunt for someone to pull it down for you - remove the forks and tyres (lay them wrapped along side the frame) and send it off in a more compact, lighter box.
You could sell the 3 speed and recoup some of the costs too.

I think your right Hyena... same myself a shitload of Moula. I have a set of new downhill forks I'd use (if they were to fit the neck)...and discs and brakes. Doesn't really matter about the paint...

Will ring them now and see what goes... I made a few phone calls last week to shops that were advertising their Felts - but there were none on the floor.

...just called the shop - there is some crappy agreement that the shops have with Felt, that none of their bikes are to be shipped to customers (from the shops) in a state of disassembly. Third time I've been told that now. May just have to catch a plane to the nearest source, and ride it home.

Looks like I won't be able to get the Felt...

..so will mongrel up a Nirve Kilroy... same theme. Rear motor, most likely use a 6-speed derailleur, front and rear disks, DNM downhill 180 forks. Will buy the Ammo box and sew up some panniers of same design. Front and rear 3inch Wide 24" fatties (should clearance allow).

Mongrel Photoshop Chop-Job.

Hello,

I just joined this forum to comment on this thread. Any progress on your project? I just received an MP as a birthday gift from my wife. Here it is:
Image

I have been researching this exact idea. It s a bummer that you can't get this bike shipped to you. Have you made any progress?

So far I am interested in this option from ampedbikes dot com:
http://www.ampedbikes.com/completel.html

I would like to go the front hub drive route and lace it into the stock wheel. Brakes would still be a question mark though. I have not done an awful lot of research on what the best options are yet.

Regards,
