Thanks for the quick response, agniusm. In that case I will email Cell-man and see if his bms is ok. It should be as it is the one he sells with his batteries.

I think they are customize for Ping to 3.85-3.9v. The headways like a lower hvc. So what BMS limits for A123 in real life. ? Docnjoj let us know your choice.

Checkout the mini-bms from clean power. very well made, inexpensive. I've been using one for over a year.

cell-man sells the headway BMS with his packs i think. it puts the cells right on 3.65V because they add some resistors to the calibration of the divider bridge at final test so it is right on 3.65V. all the BMSs use 3.9V as the cell level HVC. also the headway BMS has bigger output fets than the signalab.

Clean power BMS is here: http://minibms.mybigcommerce.com/, 232USD for 16S is some money. I would suggest looking at Chinese manufacturer here:http://www.foundingpower.com/en/Products/Smart_BMS/2012041639.html
I bought one for myself but have not tested it. I like included LCD with it as well as programming cable so you can setup LVC and HVC to your preference. My mate said it works good, cant vouch thou.
Look at this thread: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=35151&p=512272#p512272

I'm not sure that this is the correct thread for this but I just got my 14 cells from Xin. They all checked out at 3.27 to 3.28 on a fairly accurate old Knight VOM. Yippie! DHL from China was less than a week. Now for the rest of the charging and testing! I have 2 Voltphreaks chargers in // for about 4 amps current to 3.65v so it's gonna take a while.

I was warned that pin numbering is too small and will peal off, and it does, however i did it as it leaves imprint on PCB for reference.
Have to sort out the blocks and quick. nobody likes waiting :)

I'm hoping for 3.65v. That seems to be the correct charge level for these cells. Is that correct 999zip999?

Have you checked those links i gave you regarding BMS? I think the price will work out roughly the same but you will have an option to change LVC and HVC on the fly through your lapy. Few other parameters you can fiddle about. It makes it future proof.

Got some nice stuff to build my test rig for lots of current. 6 x 1000W light bulbs at 24V. Hock them up in parallel and we have 6kW.

...so if my math is right i should be pulling 275amps. Will see the tops

Well I just solved the BMS problem! I bought a Hyperion 1420i and will run without one. Those cells are about 18ah worst case, and we ride standard routes so we normally use only about 13 ah at most. I figure it is worth trying out since I never overuse my batteries. I'll just balance charge every cycle if necessary and maybe even use Kfongs LVC switch as extra protection. It works great on my wifes bike where we run a 10 ah Ping // with 6 Fatpacks. We pedal all the time so usually get about 25 mile range. Obviously I'll monitor the new pack with either cellogs or a whatmeter. Problem solved, I hope.

For the first bulk have soldered connectors to PCB's so will have less work :) There is one firm that i am negotiating block manufacture as it looks like it is hard to work with brass and perimeter routing cost lots of router bits. Man from the firm is looking for a solution to fit in a budget.

They look great but I have a question. What kind of connectors are they and are they compatable with the regular JST-XH types that are used for balance charging?

East German bulbs?! You definitely need to give that rig a good James Bond-style bad-guy superweapon name.
