Dark Green Motor Sports, Penrose, NC:

The wind sliding past your face, a breathtaking natural vista, the crisp scent of pine needles, and…the need for speed? That’s right! If you’re looking for an exhilarating, off-the-beaten-path activity, then set your sights on Western North Carolina. That’s where you’ll find an incredible outdoor experience that’s as beautiful as it is thrilling: Dark Green Motorsports, the first electric motor cross track in the country.

Created by avid outdoorsman and seasoned motorcycle enthusiast Stephen Salzman, the 1,400-meter electric bike course is the only one of its kind.

“Dark Green Motorsports is nestled in the picturesque North Carolina mountains, and it’s not just open to motorcycle enthusiasts—it offers an unforgettable time for all types of people, whether you’re a newbie or an expert,” says Salzman, owner of the electric bike course.

“After spending some time in the WNC area, I noticed that there were only a few activities that would be fun for the whole family and environmentally friendly, so I decided to combine my love of the outdoors and motorcycles to bring ‘electricross,’ as I call it, to the mountains,” he explains. “Riders can choose to take a quick one-hour spin around the course or make a day of it and tear up the dirt for hours. It’s really up to you!”

Visitors can also take advantage of a cabin on the property and use Dark Green Motorsports as a home base while exploring other activities in the mountains.
Whether you’re looking for a fun family outing, a girls’ getaway, an unparalleled thrill, or are trying to plan your next corporate retreat, Dark Green Motorsports has something for everyone. Read on to discover why you’ll love electricross racing, as well as several groups who are perfect for it:

Why you’ll love it:

Beginners wanted. Good news: No previous riding experience is necessary! If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride an electric dirt bike. There is no clutch, transmission, gears, or foot brake.

“A lot of people are reluctant to try dirt bikes because they say they can’t drive a stick-shift car, let alone a motorcycle,” Salzman explains. “When they get to Dark Green Motorsports, they’re very pleasantly surprised by the fact that they can just get on the bike and go!”

You’re sure to feel a thrill! For experienced riders who love whoops, hops, table tops, and doubles, you’ll be sure to get your adrenaline fix at this track. Designed by experienced track racers, the Dark Green Motorsports track has all the thrills veteran racers crave!

“If you don’t know what any of that technical jargon means, don’t worry,” assures Salzman. “I don’t think anyone has gotten off of his or her bike without a huge grin, whether it was his or her first or fortieth visit! I promise, you’ll enjoy your first time around the track, and the fun factor will only increase as you become more and more confident.”

You get more bike for your buck. The track is open to riders seven days a week and can accommodate up to eight riders at a time, so you shouldn’t have any trouble booking an electricross appointment. Top-of-the-line Zero Motorcycles electric bikes are available to rent for only $25 an hour, and group rates are also available upon request.

“You can also rest easy in the knowledge that it’s okay to pack light,” says Salzman. “You won’t have to shell out a ton of money for expensive equipment. Just wear jeans and closed-toe shoes. You can rent your gear (helmet, goggles, and gloves) for just $5. Riders also have the option to bring their own electric bikes.”

It’s a race course with a conscience. The electric bikes at Dark Green Motorsports run on no fuel and are virtually silent, so you’re able to take in nature while not destroying it: the best of both worlds!

“These bikes are so quiet, which many people don’t expect,” points out Salzman. “Spectators can keep up a conversation without raising their voices, and our neighbors love us!”
