Lipo Pyro fun

Postby Drunkskunk » Fri May 04, 2012 9:41 pm

Just a quick video. I wanted to try out my GoPro and some editing software. Really its just an excuse to cause a fire.

Single cell from a failed HK pack. The cell had already vented, but there wasn't much to see at that point in the video.

Nice burst of flame. My preferred way to dispose of bad cells too.

Shocked at the beer spillage, That is only permitted if your entire pack goes up in flames!

WHat was the strategy? charging to 5 volts? Over discharging then over-charging?

Hey, you really did not have any other flammable fumes in that bucket? :P

Why did it "poof" & flame-up & flash so high-up? :?:

I guess Doctorbass was right about the cell consuming itself by its contents, but that was a serious ignition flash-up. Even the gaseous fumes could possibly ignite & "explode" too.

Throw a match into the gaseous plume next time.

The beer was mourned. And while lost beer can never be replaced, another was drank in its honor. :D

I hooked it up to a half dead car battery and let it sit. It actualy took 15 minutes to flame up. That cell had started to puff during charging a while ago. No extra fuel needed, using an iron kettle like that caught all the outgassing and directed it up.

I'd observed in other videos of lipo fires that they vented a lot of gas before they flamed up. My theory was that most of it was lost, blown too far away to burn. I was using the pot to capture it and direct it up into what i hoped would become the flame column. seems to have worked.

Okay, remind me to put lithium batteries in a trailer about twelve feet behind the bike.

When you intentionally make them explode, you should probably take them off the trailer :)
