I would try to put all possible weight over front wheel, it will compromise handling but increase traction.
To be more flexible and be able to split the pack if handling is not what you expect, as well good C rate if in the future you want to run this beast in rear of larger chassis, I would use RC LiPo.
Again.
1) They are lite
2) They are powerful
3) They need baby care!!! (If you do something wrong it can have disastrous consequences)
4) and you need some serious preparation, search and read as much as you can about RC LiPo here on ES.
Here is what I like to use. Have over 60 of this packs purchased and no complains. They are cheap and already protected.

What controller will you use?

Is that the battery?
How much are they?

How long will it power that beast of a motor for?

My (36 volt hub motor with a lead acid gel battery) goes about 17 MPH,
and only about 3 miles at full speed; I had it for 2 and a half years.

I think the battery might be wearing out. So I will be needing
a replacement battery for the "trikke tribred" (T78 deluxe frame).

I need some "serious" help on the hills.
I would like to top out at 24-30 MPH
and get about 20 miles of travel.
So my goal is to modify a T12.

Note: a T78 deluxe is a smaller frame size than the T12.
(the numbers [8" vs 12"] represent the size of the tires)

Does the voltage of the motor make the need for different batteries?
(I'm electrically illiterate) Like 60 volt vs 72 volt vs 48 volt motors?

Ed J,
I do not know what motor can fit in your trike, but being front hub short base and high center of gravity do not expect to push more then 2KW in it. In any case, motor does not have voltage or current, it will swallow everything you can give until overheating.
In case of your smaller trike, you can up the voltage and upgrade controller (box that inverts battery DC current into PWMd motor feeding current) and get your 30MPH or more.
Find BLDC sensor motor that fits your bigger scooter physical dimensions first, rest is peace of cake.

Controller will depend on your motor and throttle can be purchase with controller. Good source for controllers is Lyen (search in for sale section), he makes programmable high current controllers capable of 36-150V.

Voltage increase is almost proportional to speed increase if you can feed necessary current and motor can take it.

As example: I am running modified Mxus DD rear hub with inscription 36v 500W. I feed in 100v of charger and ~3000W continuous or up to 10000W burst. :)

Hi Parabellum, Won't pumping higher voltage into a 36 volt motor - burn it out faster?

I want a bigger frame for the higher speeds,
BUT, I would like the litter one go faster as well.

The frames weigh about the same: 36 LBS,
the litter T78 deluxe frame is made of steel,
while the larger T12's frame is made of aluminum.

There is a manual aspect of propulsion that you add by
"rocking" side to side while you're kicking like rollerblading.
Thus, the larger frame will be better at speed in these two ways.

This aspect of helping it to - keep the speed - has
a certain conservation to the battery as well.

________________________________________________________

Therefore, I would like to maximize my "speed to weight ratio".
Modifying a T12 with a 60 volt e-kit seems to be the best answer.
Where do I find this mini beast motor and all the associated parts?

I need some "serious" help on the hills.
I would like to top out at 24-30 MPH
and get about 20 miles of travel.

Ed J
PS. a new controller and better battery
sounds like the answer for the smaller one.

Sorry I can not give any recommendations on 12" hubs, have never had one in my hands. Maybe you should look in scooter/motorcycle section. It is actually only part strictly dimensioned for your need. Look for everything over 500W. Maybe you can just buy mentioned 5000W monster if it fits your fork, little extra power is good to have.
I will jump in when you got one, with rest of your setup.

The motor you chose burns out controllers.

This motor is much better.
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/52030 ... motor.html
and is also nicknamed greyborg.

It will be difficult to spoke almost 10" motor into 12" rim (if you get one).

it would be easier to use it as it is with a pirelli tyre, would probably give him 12" with a thick moped tyre up front

Have you seen what I've done with my T12?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_JRh2ff_cg

1000 watts LiFePo4. 30 mile distance. 2 hour rides. 18.5 mph top speed. Can be made to go faster with higher voltages, but then one risks burning out something.
