I think 8-12v on an 18v pack might not be super comforting. Doctorbass rejects all packs under 12.5v (Of course, you're also selling for 66% less $). So these packs are 5s right? If they're 8v, how many cells are they supposed to have that are above 2v? I can't imagine many cells go below 1v, so you're talking about at max having 4 cells above 2v (1+1+1+2+2=7v *2 because they're 2p). For $5 you'd be getting 1300mah*3.7v*4 = $.26/wh. Actually, that would be quite nice, but I'm not sure how likely to expect 4 cells still delivering 1300mah from an 8v pack.

My guess is just that people are less clear what to expect from 8-12v packs. Have you had luck with these before or do you know of someone having luck with them? If someone is lucky, this could be actually a decent deal (I didn't realize until I did the math above). Personally I have a bit too many projects on my hands right now, but I think the only reason no one has snapped this up would just be that wavering sense of confidence. Or that they've only been for sale for a short while.

It really depends how the pack went bad. Even packs from Doc will sometimes have 5s at like 2.5v/cell (or more) if something on the board blew as opposed to the more typical outer cell pair that blew so 4s at around 3.1v/cell. Totally recoverable either way. Konions can be revived from even 0v sometimes, but their internal resistance goes through the roof (they get hot, hot)... still... these packs would make really good "runt" packs or "get me home" packs.

I would bet that of the 275 cells in this deal you could scrape together a kick ass 20s10p setup that would kick out 3-4kw sustained very easily. Cycle life is the real issue. Docs packs are cycle analyzed so you know you're going to get 100s more cycles. LiMn ain't exactly a cycle champion so if these packs blew after like 300 cycles they're not gonna be worth much at all.

Still... for the price and if you like konions this deal is really, really hard to beat.

Yes, 8-12V packs might be more of a gamble...

I just opened a 10.2V pack, one S had 3.3V, other 3.4V and other 3.5V, other 2 Ss we're 0V... 90% of all 8-12V packs are 10V+.

I would be ready to sell the packs per "good cell" at 2.5V and above... but a little bit of a higher price for labour to open these up, remove the fishpaper protector and test each Series 2P cells.

That is a lot of work. It takes me like 15-20 minutes to completely process a single pack into a 1s10p tab welded chunk using the existing cell holders & ready for series connection (not counting initial charge time).



Personally I'd rather pay the $5 per weak pack and take my chances on the cycle count. That is an unbeatable price. Hell even if some cells only last 100 cycles it's still worth it.

Oh yeah.. and shipping would be a much bigger pain in the butt because of the shorting potential. Dead shorting one of these packs can cause some serious plasma ball dances. Ask me how I know.

LoL, I would put them back in the makita packs...

Testing the voltage is fairly easy. only removing the fishpaper from each side of the battery and testing each Parallel pack. No?

Yes test each parallel group of two cells. Here is how Doctorbass does it.

I am wondering what would happen if you opened up a defective makita battery pack and tried to charge it with a RC charger? Charge cells without removing the electronics. Charge it up. Put it back together. Sell it.

It's not worth screwing with low cells 2.5v. For a main pack. Take trouch up a little if die and reversed.

I like the way doc casually sets the metal screw driver on the desktop right next to a built and exposed battery. At the 5 minute mark my eyes are glued to the screw driver as it inches closer and closer.

Can somebody do a video edit of him saying "the board" around 1:40 or 2:40ish, I wanna see if he sounds like the swedish shef?

Ah... funny .. I never noticed that.. but you can sleep now... I always use kapton insulator or fibergalss on the battery exposed parts.. and the one on the desk is no exception
