Power and control all in one plug

Postby crusoe » Mon May 21, 2012 10:10 pm

Hey guys, i've found the thread on here that had already asked this question, and I figured out what connector I think I want to buy (via that thread). I just want to double check that my calculations are correct. Here we go:

6s 5ah 20c turnigy lipo. Wired into a 24s2p pack for 88.8v nom @ 10ah (100v hot off charger).
Controller settings: 75a phase, 50a rated current.

This is the connector I was looking at - specifically the 75amp model.

Also found these: http://www.te.com/aboutus/news/prodinnov.aspx?id=1935

I want it to handle:

1. main battery power (big connectors)
2. phase wires (big connectors)
3. throttle (small connectors)
4. ca connectors (small connectors)
5. lyen 18fet programming connectors (small connectors)
6. 3 way switch (small connectors)
7. temp probe (small connectors)

It works out to 23 small connectors and 5 large connectors. So in that sense, this connector should be perfect.

Here are the calculations. I based power on what my max watts would ever be on my HS3540 - I picked 4500w peak to leave some padding

P = V*C
4500/100v = 45amps through the main battery lines (if my line of thought is correct. I'm not sure about this 45a vs my controller setting of 50a though, it seems odd to me)

So my question is, do those look correct, or am I overlooking something here?

You don't have any upgrade plans? With an 18FET controller, 75A phase current sounds like you are driving a ferarri at 50km/h.

Also, I am not sure what exactly you want to connect here. Do you want the controller to be detachable and easily reconnected with this connector?
Furthermore, what is the price of that thing?

Did you account for connector failure? In other words, if one of the bullet fails (e.g. due to sparking) can you replace the bullet or do you have to buy a whole new connector?

Just some thoughts...

Too many things can fail in a single connector like that. Murphy was a frocking optimist, something will spark across or fail in some other way. With our systems the KISS principle works best. Have your phase wires on one plug and your power on another, that sort of thing.
Cool looking plug though.

You guys bring up some very good points! Especially in regards to replacing charred plugs. I emailed Anderson and they never got back with quotes.

You don't have any upgrade plans? With an 18FET controller, 75A phase current sounds like you are driving a ferarri at 50km/h.

Haha, you're exactly right! That HS3540 can't take that much phase and still run cool 100% of the time. I usually run it at around 30-40A at 40km/h. The 75A phase is for hot dogging it the odd time to pass cars/get in a safe position fast. The plan is to get a cromotor, but that's at least a year away or so.
