A123 pack building technique

Postby Rollodo » Thu May 24, 2012 5:36 pm

Haven't seen it on here, but I like how this guy did the A123 pack assembly:

Because it appears that Paul isn't able to build a custom battery (he's only offering standard battery pack layouts), I may need to order a good number of these separately.

Oh yeah, there had to be something strange about omitting that step. Any good videos or pics on adding those wires?

Yeah balance cables kinda important also the thickness of those cables he used was ridiculous considering he was only running 2p.

When it comes to cable size there is a point where the extra weight and reduced flexibility offsets the conductivity improvement.
A 12awg or 10awg would have sufficed for that pack perfectly.

At 2P, those cells can source well over 400 amps. 6ga wire might not be overkill. I built a flashlight (5000+ lumens) that uses 8 of those cells. They can be configured as 8S or 4S2P. I used 8 gauge. My flashlight has jumper cables...

I believe he was using a thicker wire to account for higher current down the line? Unless I need help with electronics again.

Erm 400amps I don't think so the max continuous rating for these cells is 30c which means about 70 amps per a cell and even then they would get very hot.

Like i said 12awg or 10awg perfectly adequate.

But your more than welcome to carry around extra weight and have reduced flexibility.

I've built some 5S and 6S 2P booster packs with these cells. The people I shipped them to are VERY VERY happy with them. I have personally discharged these puppies (2 in parallel) up to 40 amps and I don't notice that much heat like you say.

Migueralliart, how can offer A123's at half the price Hobby King is offering them for?

I was involved in a College project in which we needed to prototype some electronics that were running off 3S a123 packs. We ordered like 700+ packs for production but out customer didn't want to pursue the production so he gave us all the packs and I got ahold of them. They were all brand new. I don't have many left as the majority was sold pretty fast.

How many do you have left? I just came across your thread.
