yep! Once I get the performance numbers for this config, I'm putting the CF tray in (shown previously) and doubling the pack   (It would add about 45lbs- on a bike that weighs 200lbs, it's a significant difference...)

Just got her weigh-in: 227.2 lbs! Not as svelte as I was hoping, by 27.2 lbs, but not too shabby. :D

Well, decided to lose a little weight. 15lbs, to be precise... Out with the ME0709, in with the ETEK. Now to work out the gearing.

I've decided to make these motor mounts available for sale, in aluminum or steel. Details here:

DAMN. Seems like it took forever to get the new tires and get them mounted. Here they are, all true and balanced and ready to run.

Next up, some speed runs!

Been a while... sorry I haven't been updating!

FINALLY got me an original '72 TD3 tank, and got it mounted and all yellow:

I'm now running the Motenergy ME1003, rather than the ETEK, which didn't have enough torque for me.

Looks perfect. :D

So isn't this about the time one decides to sell off the old project to finance the new one?

Got the tank mounting brackets set up finally, some more yellow and clearcoat, and the tank emblem mounted.

Looks really nice, Ted! With the recent changes I've lost track of performance figures...can you update us with speed, range, etc.? Thanks! :D

I'm afraid I've lost track of that myself as well. :D I'm making a few more additions, including cell logs, and I'd DEARLY love to build up the pack a bit more, since it gets tapped pretty hard right now under full acceleration. It's been a long while since I last ran it... or even had a good slot of time to work on it. (booooo!) I haven't even had time to get it in shape for a new set of photos...

(In the middle of it all, I had to rebuild my wife's MGB. It seems that the hole in the piston isn't really great for optimum performance, and she wouldn't let me slap an AC50 into it... yet... )

One of the tests I want to run is to test out the idea of running a transmission simulation. I want to do an acceleration test with two gearings, and then the same tests with a 30lb weight added to the bike, simulating the addition of a tranny. I've read a bunch of theory, but I want some actual numbers, and this is a pretty simple way to do it.

Nah, wait for that water-cooled 9" they keep hinting at. ;)

OK, update time.

I've had a few specific goals, and feel like I have most of them almost complete. The first has been a lingering idea to get a nice instrument panel made ever since I saw this awesome vintage piece at a show a while back. I threw together some drawings and sent them off to Gotham Machine, and they did a simply awesome job making my ideas into something pretty.

Here's the instrument panel in the bike:

Image

I can't say enough about their work. http://www.gothammachine.com You guys are the BEST, Clark!

I wanted, just because it seems like a no-brainer, to get some more aggressive cooling, so I got a motor cover from John at Motenergy and, well, had at it. I'm sure he's shaking his head. The motor really hasn't shown any need for more cooling, it's just something I thought should be done.

Here's my slightly modified Motenergy "scoop" cover:

Image

I've been obsessed with the idea of quick-swappable batteries, and now have a design that works astoundingly well. Or it should. :D At least, at the moment, it fits.

...the battery module frame:

Image

...with batteries:

Image

...and the bare pack module (this is my "micro pack" lipo) laid out:

Here's the whole bike, pieced together:

Pretty much wrapped it up today!

Here are some final shots, with the "sprint" battery pack in. The module system works great!

The cluster with the LED (yes, it took me 3 weeks to get up the nerve to drill a hole in Gotham's bracket):

...seemed like a proper place for a sponsor decal:

The connection for the module:

The blinky light (main pack power ON):

Now. On to Phase 3. :o

Long story short... The will probably wrap up this build thread for the most part. The battery module works like a champ, as you'll see, and I wanted to include one shot here because it harkens back to my original carbon-fiber battery tray where the expansion chambers used to be.

So, I heard about an Alternative Energy Day at Mount Washington. Steeper than Pikes Peak, same vertical climb, and with a longer history of auto racing. It still has an unpaved section too. Except it was about a month away, and I didn't have a big lipo pack yet. I casted about to a few friends, but couldn't get a pack together in time. I was ready to give up and shoot for next year, then I did some Math

If I pulled every moderately healthy battery I had together and somehow got it on the bike, I had the 2-2.5kwh that I hoped would get me up the mountain.

Here's what that looked like:

Image

That's my SLA 20ah pack in the belly, and my lipo in the module. I had this in my backpack:

Image

I stole that from my son's electric moped. What can I say, he's off to college, I get what's left behind, right?

After waiting out the winds and temps on the summit, I made the bid once they opened the mountain. At about 1.5mi I swapped the connectors off the lead and onto the lipo, which pulled me up to the 6 mile mark (the road is about 8mi to the summit). At that stop I pulled out the lipo pack and slapped in the Headways, which pulled all the way to about 10' short of the parking lot... but close enough to claim I made it!

Here's the final approach, shot by the guy running the event:

Image

Here's the shot on the summit:

Image

...for which I earned this coveted bit of bling:

Image

The temps on the summit were around 26ºF with a wind of around 50mph. Needless to say, I really didn't linger much...

Here's the video of the ride:

I posted a bunch of background on Mt Washington on the blog, here: http://evmc2.wordpress.com/?s=mt+washington if you're interested...

The bike worked incredibly well, and the whole swappable battery pack worked better than I could have hoped. To top it off, I got a report that a "production electric bike" had made the attempt this summer (I don't know which brand) and had to turn back at the Halfway House site, with spent batteries. On the ride down he smoked his brakes, too. I'm happy to say my 1971 drum brakes performed flawlessly!

Oh, not for nuthin'? I'm the third electric motorcycle in history to make the peak! 8)

congrats! It really is awesome that you've made what I consider a piece of artwork, and aren't afraid to put it to the test. Cheers.
