Motors From Junkyard

Postby k_kasun » Tue May 29, 2012 10:28 pm

I am thinking of building a chain driven Electric Bicycle. I cant afford any new parts, so i think i will try find some from a junkyard or something.

1.What sort of typical ratings are good for a chain drive-motor:

Power?
RPM?
Voltage?
Current?

2. Do you have any experience finding a good motor from a junkyard if so what type of "things" did you look for?

Washing Machine Motor?
Treadmill motor?
Dishwasher motor?
ect.

Thanks for your help!

You're going to want to do a lot of reading of the forum; all the answers are in people's various threads about homebuilt chaindrives and such. It'll get you experience vicariously about all the problems you may encounter, too.

Look for Bottom Bracket (BB) drive, Chain Drive, Stokemonkey (SM), Cyclone, etc., for a few search terms to get you started.

If you look at my DayGlo Avenger and CrazyBike2 threads, you'll see a few possible methods and problems. REdiculous has a treadmill motor build thread. Many others are documented in quite a lot of detail here on ES, too, but you'll want to read around (mostly in this subforum) to find out the questions you will really need answered, once you get far enough to ask them. ;)

what is a junkyard and where can you find them?

it seems like they are obsolete and the principal of having that essential creative part, re-purposed to the need of the current crisis repair, is only preserved now among people who are considered to have the worst of social diseases, OCD!

i find that having piles of junk around deters burglars because they can't find their way around to anything worth stealing and they trip over it at night!

deters girlfriends too.

Yey, Verily. And what do you think you will eventually be able to rummage for that you couldn't find in plain sight at an electronics surplus store? Close to home, in nonjunk condition.

i find that having piles of junk around . . . deters girlfriends too.

I've found they think it puts them in charge, they get to start with the barking orders over all of it. Not near enough deterence.

verily i say unto thee......"she who must be obeyed"

so true, so true, that is when you know this relationship is not gonna work out no matter how tasty she is, and you realize they don't even know what they are missing when they start putting you down about all the sweet saves you have collected for an entire lifetime up until you met her!

think prenup, and know that 18 years of child support is right behind her.
