replacement battery required

Postby ebent » Sat Jun 02, 2012 11:25 pm

A neighbor has a golf cart. Standard set up. I guess a massive 12v SLA. Can a lithium battery be installed? Is it financially effecient? Thanks for the help.

There's no specific standard for golf carts. Some are 24V, some 36V, some 48V, etc. Space used for batteries varies, too.

Basically we gotta know all the same things about the cart and it's usage that we'd need to know about an ebike to recommend a battery. ;)

Simple answer is yes. Half the AH rating , and about 1/8 the weight of those lead weights will get you more distance. As already pointed out, will need controller info to make battery selection.

Yep. I would go with thunderskies or similar prismatic packs of lifepo4. 4 cells per 12v, and monitor with a voltmeter on each cell.

Cost effective? Maybe not, far as I know the golf courses have not adopted them yet in my locale. Definitely the way to go though, if you need more range than possible with the lead. I'd stick with the lead if you are able to charge at frequent intervals after short runs.
THE LIPO RULES. NEVER ABOVE 4.3V NEVER BELOW 2.7V DON'T PUNCTURE

Ideal charging /discharging range for Lipo, 3.65v minimum 4.1v maximum

See battery technology section, FAQ thread at the top of the page for lipo noob info.

This cart will never see a golf coarse. It will be on a 1 acre property. It will be used a little for yard work and also to serve the dock and fishing boat. It is a long dock and and a small hill near the house. Modest amount of ah required. I'll find out about the voltage and controler.

no, it is not financially feasible. the guy will not know how to maintain the pack, it will die and the huge cashflow outlay will be wasted. they are able to haul the fat ass batteries around so he should continue using them.

Those fat ass batteries keep that cart from rolling over after a couple of beers.
