Upgrading phase wires on a Q100

Postby Sunder » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:58 pm

Guys,

Just a quick question.

Has anyone upgraded the phase wires on the Q100? They look like they're AWG18-20? Even at the rated current of 10 amps, it barely looks big enough, and I want to put 20-22 in there.

The problem is, the spindle it comes out of, doesn't look like it'd hold much thicker wire. 14AWG might *just* make the 20A I want to put in there. I would have preferred 12AWG, but that's almost certainly out.

Anyone done it? Did you mod the cover or something? Just looking for tips before I start ripping it apart.

Thanks.

I know a guy running 20A on a stock Q100.

The phase wires get hot, but he has a thousand or so miles of trouble free operation.

Yeah. I bought a little bit of 14AWG. I don't think it's going to fit in there.

I may just have to run it on the stock wires, and be careful to not do long sustained bursts at high amps.

I'm not sure that it's a good idea. Having looked inside the motor, I'd say that the limit is about 20amps, which the standard wires can manage. Any more than that and you're going to strip the gears.

If you are worried about the Hall wires, just unplug them. I just did and with the KU63 controller, I couldn't tell any difference at all.

No, the hall wires are micro fine. They take barely any room at all. In fact, all 5 could probably fit in the gap created by 3 x14 awg wires easily.

Going to try it stock before I worry too much. Will probably test all the gear this weekend on a stand, then get it laced up next week.

edit: damn autocorrect...

I didn't say remove them, just don't plug in the connector.

I'm missing something... The sensor wires don't carry much current, so why would disconnecting them give me more leeway to run higher current?
